Role Overview:

This Highway Technician 3 position is based in the traffic markings department within the LaPorte District. Responsibilities include general highway maintenance, striping state roads, working with thermal plastic, and some bucket work. On-the-job training will be provided. The role may require overnight shifts and mandatory overtime for emergency operations, including winter weather.

Salary:

The position typically starts at $20.00 per hour, with potential adjustments based on education and experience.

CDL Positions:

Candidates with a valid CDL and endorsements required by the district will earn an additional $1 per hour. Those without a CDL will have 90 days to obtain one and will then earn the additional $1 per hour. CDL training is provided onsite by certified INDOT staff.

Location:

This position is located in INDOT’s LaPorte District, Traffic Department.

A Day in the Life:

The core duties include:

  • Following all INDOT safety policies and procedures.
  • Operating highway maintenance and traffic equipment to maintain and repair highways and rights-of-way.
  • Loading and moving supplies and materials.
  • Performing winter operations such as snow and ice removal.
  • Maintaining, repairing, and installing traffic signs, route markers, and pavement markings.
  • Responding to emergencies, including traffic control, lane closures, and barricade placement.
  • Conducting routine inspections and equipment maintenance.
  • Completing job documentation in the Work Management System (WMS).
  • Assisting the public by responding to inquiries and explaining delays.
  • Performing basic construction inspection duties as needed.

Additional duties may include:

Traffic Inventory Specialist:

  • Maintaining and installing traffic signs, route markers, and pavement markings.
  • Receiving, inspecting, and recording new materials and equipment.
  • Maintaining inventory records and operating computerized inventory systems.
  • Attending to assigned worksite(s) daily.

What You'll Need for Success:

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • A valid CDL or ability to obtain one within 90 days.
  • Pass a drug test.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and perform physical activities such as lifting, dragging, standing, and walking for extended periods.
  • Endure exposure to inclement weather.
  • Clear reading, writing, and communication skills.
  • Ability to operate specialized traffic equipment (e.g., bucket trucks, paint equipment).
  • Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team.

Additional requirements depending on the assignment may include:

  • Knowledge of electronic inventory control systems.
  • Understanding of bookkeeping procedures.
  • Ability to perform essential functions with or without accommodations.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Reports: This role may include supervisory duties based on agency needs.
