Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Patrol and respond to freeway incidents and set up traffic control.
  • Identify operational deficiencies and advise on solutions.
  • Monitor traffic conditions and report issues to supervision.
  • Operate in-vehicle video equipment and CB radio for information.
  • Remove debris, control minor spills, and request specialized assistance when needed.
  • Perform pre-operation vehicle inspections and inventory checks.
  • Interact with maintenance personnel for vehicle upkeep.
  • Maintain general housekeeping in Hoosier Helper garage facilities.
  • Complete incident logs, motorist service logs, time sheets, and daily reports.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and be present at assigned worksites.

Location:

This position is with INDOT’s Central Office in Indianapolis.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Patrolfor, and respondsto, freeway incidents that disrupt the normal flow of traffic, setsup traffic control for incidents,anddetectsand verifiesincidentsand traffic problems caused by special events.
  • Serveas a liaison to the Supervisor by identifying freeway operational deficiencies and advising of potential solutions.
  • Observetraffic conditions and reportstoSupervisor anytraffic operation problems, deficiencies in work zone traffic control setup by other agencies, unauthorized lane closures or work, and/or unusual traffic delays.
  • Monitorin-vehicle video equipment to locate incidentsand monitorsCB radio to gather information about disturbances in traffic flow.
  • Removedebris, controlsminor spillsand requestsassistance for complex clean up,and reportsneed for specialized equipment, personnel or materials.
  • Performpre-operation vehicle inspectionsand inventory checks (fluid levels, tire inflation, wash and wax vehicle, replaces depleted tools or supplies on vehicle).
  • Interact with maintenance garage personnel for planned and unplanned maintenance of vehicle.
  • Performgeneral housekeeping duties of Hoosier Helper occupied garage facilities.
  • Performdaily administrativetasks such ascompletion ofincident logs, motorist service logs, time sheets and daily work reports;and,
  • Performotherrelatedduties as assigned.
  • Workday attendance at assigned worksite(s) is an essential function of this position.

What You'll Need for Success:

Individuals in this role should minimally be able to articulate or demonstrate the following:

  • Be willing to travel with an appropriate accommodation.
  • Must possess a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or obtain one with the first 90 days of employment.
  • Required to submit to and pass a drug test as a condition of employment.
  • Must be able to move weight up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to frequently move self and objects.
  • Must be able to endure exposure to inclement weather.
  • Must have ability to read, write,and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to follow directions and work as part of a team.
  • Effective interpersonal skills.
  • Basic knowledge of automobile mechanical skills.

A degree is not required. However, a High School Diploma or High School Equivalent (HSE) applying applying the outlined knowledge, skills, and abilities in a similar role may be considered.

This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
