Kleinfelder, a multidisciplinary engineering firm, invites applications for a Highway Engineer role in a hybrid capacity based in Mechanicsburg, PA. You will design transportation projects ranging from small improvements to large infrastructure, collaborating with engineers, designers, and construction professionals.

Ideal candidates hold a BSCE with 6+ years of highway design experience; a PE is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering (ABET) required.
  • 6+ years of highway and transportation design experience.
  • PE license preferred.
  • Experience with roadway, intersection, and interchange projects.
  • PennDOT/PA Turnpike design experience preferred.
  • Proficiency in MicroStation and related software.
  • Knowledge of federal/state/local permitting regulations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed design for highway and transportation projects, including intersections and interchanges.
  • Prepare engineering documents for advertisements and construction per design criteria and regulatory standards.
  • Conduct design calculations, technical analysis, and produce project specifications for transportation infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, clients, and sub-consultants for alignment and compliance.
  • Assist with project budgeting, cost estimates, and schedule tracking.
  • Conduct site visits and inspections to support design accuracy.
  • Provide construction support and address design questions during execution.
  • Occasionally travel to project or client sites for meetings.

As a Highway Engineer, you will be directly involved in the design and execution of a wide range of transportation projects, from small enhancements to large infrastructure developments. Key Responsibilities
  • Project Design and Execution: Perform detailed design work for highway and transportation projects, including intersections, road widenings, interchanges, and smaller enhancements.
  • Technical Development: Prepare engineering documents for project advertisements and construction, ensuring compliance with applicable design criteria and regulatory standards
  • Engineering Analysis: Conduct design calculations, technical analysis, and produce project specifications for transportation infrastructure.
  • Collaboration and Coordination: Work closely with internal teams, clients, and sub-consultants to ensure design alignment and compliance with project requirements.
  • Budgeting and Scheduling: Assist with project budgeting, cost estimates, and schedule tracking to support project efficiency and financial management.
  • Site Assessments: Conduct site visits and inspections to gather data and ensure design accuracy, providing technical support throughout the construction phase.
  • Construction Support: Address design-related questions or issues that arise during project execution, ensuring smooth implementation of engineering plans.
  • Client Interaction: Travel occasionally to project or client sites for meetings, site assessments, and project-related tasks.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering (BSCE) from an ABET-accredited program.
  • 6+ years of experience in highway and transportation design.
  • Registered Professional Engineer (PE) preferred.
  • Strong hands‑on experience with roadway, intersection, and interchange projects.
  • PennDOT and/or Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) design experience preferred.
  • Proficiency in design and plan preparation using MicroStation and related software.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and local jurisdiction permitting regulations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for collaborating with team members, clients, and regulatory agencies.
  • Valid driver’s license with a safe driving record.

Following an offer, candidates will be required to satisfactorily complete employment reference checks, verification of professional licensure and/or educational credentials, a motor vehicle report (MVR), and a comprehensive background check.
