Job summary

Mackin Engineers & Consultants seeks a skilled Highway Engineer to support planning and design of transportation infrastructure in a collaborative Pittsburgh area team. You will prepare highway plans, cost estimates, and contract documents from preliminary to final design while contributing to multiple projects.

The role requires a civil engineering background with 5+ years in highways, EIT/FE, and familiarity with PennDOT standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
  • 5+ years’ experience in highway field or equivalent.
  • EIT/FE required, PE preferred.
  • Familiarity with PennDOT standards, practices, and funding programs.
  • Experience with MicroStation, AutoCAD, OpenRoads and related software.
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and teamwork skills.

Responsibilities

  • Design or prepare highway plans under the direction of senior engineers, including construction, right-of-way, erosion and sediment control, signing, stormwater, highway lighting, pavement marking, and maintenance protection of traffic.
  • Review highway plan designs, calculations, or cost estimates for completeness and accuracy.
  • Establish horizontal/vertical alignments, drainage design, and develop contract documents.
  • Coordinate utility conflicts and relocations and communicate design impacts to projects.
  • Prepare statements of interest or letters of interest and technical/price proposals.
  • Review submissions, prepare reports, cost estimates, specs, quantities, and presentation figures for RFPs and SOIs.
  • Conduct field views as needed.
  • Provide direction/review for CADD design and drawings.
  • Support internal departments with highway engineering services for projects.
  • Advise management of developments affecting profit, schedule, costs, client relations.
  • Contribute to Mackin’s success by supporting departments and clients.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Mackin Engineers & Consultants is seeking a skilled Highway Engineer to support the planning and design of transportation infrastructure projects. This position involves performing a range of engineering tasks using established design criteria, standards, and processes. The successful candidate will assist in the preparation of highway plans, specifications, and cost estimates from preliminary through final design and contribute to multiple design projects simultaneously. WHAT YOU'LL DO:
  • Design or prepare highway plans, under the direction of senior engineers - including construction, right-of-way, erosion and sediment pollution control, signing, stormwater, highway lighting, pavement marking, and maintenance protection of traffic
  • Review highway plan designs, design calculations, or cost estimates to ensure completeness, accuracy, and conformity to engineering standards and practices
  • Establish horizontal and vertical alignments, drainage design, and develop contract documents
  • Coordinate utility conflicts and relocations and communicate all aspects of design that may affect directly or indirectly affect the project
  • Execute or assist with statements of interest (SOI) or letters of interest preparation and technical and price proposals
  • Review submissions, prepare reports, cost estimates, specifications, tabulation of quantities and marketing field views/presentation figures for RFP's and SOI's, as needed
  • Conduct field views, as needed
  • Provide direction and review for CADD design and drawings
  • Support internal departments with highway engineering services required to execute projects
  • Advise management of new developments which may affect profit, schedule, costs, client relations, and/or inter-departmental relations
  • Contribute to the overall success of Mackin by supporting internal departments, providing exemplary service to clients, and striving to meet on-going initiatives to grow and develop the company
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field
  • 5+ years’ experience in the highway field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • EIT/FE is required, PE preferred
  • Familiarity with
    PennDOT standards, practices, and funding programs.
  • Experience with MicroStation, AutoCAD, OpenRoads, and related engineering software.
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and teamwork skills.
