Job Description
Summary/Objective

The heavy equipment operator will operate various contractor equipment and trucks used in construction, maintenance, and repair activities, performing semi-skilled tasks related to light, street, and storm drainage systems.

Essential Functions by Level
Level I
  • Operate trucks and equipment for loading, hauling, and unloading materials.
  • Ensure safety and compliance with OSHA excavation guidelines.
  • Operate basic construction equipment like mechanized broom, man-lift, dump truck, hydraulic excavators, skid steers.
  • Maintain street and utility systems using small equipment and tools.
  • Shoot grades and assist with ditch and trench digging.
  • Perform routine inspection and maintenance on equipment.
  • Assist with traffic control device installation and maintenance.

Preferred experience: 1-3 years in heavy equipment and construction.

Level II
  • Operate a wider range of trucks and construction equipment including backhoes, road graders, front-end loaders, and GPS equipment.
  • Perform grading, soil classification, and assist with civil drawings interpretation.
  • All safety and maintenance duties as Level I.
Preferred experience: 3-6 years.
Level III
  • Operate extensive construction equipment including dozers, excavators, motor graders, backhoes, skid steers, and inductor trucks.
  • Perform finishing and grading functions, shoot grades, and interpret civil drawings.
  • Assist with snow plowing and salting.
  • All duties in conformance with safety standards.
Preferred experience: 3-6 years.
Level IV
  • Operate trucks and heavy equipment, non-CDL required, with responsibilities similar to Level III but with more experience (10-15 years).
  • Perform finishing, grading, GPS, and soil classification tasks.
Preferred experience: 10-15 years.
Additional Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Four years of experience with medium/heavy equipment, including utility or street systems.
  • Valid CDL license.
Competencies
  • Technical skills, time management, thoroughness, customer focus, communication, attention to detail.
Work Environment & Physical Demands

Outdoor work in various weather conditions, exposure to mechanical parts, chemicals, noise, and physical labor including lifting up to 100 pounds.

Travel

Local travel required to different worksites.
