Job summary

HireEducation is seeking a senior backend engineer to join our technology consulting team focused on education. You will own complex backend systems end-to-end, estimate scope, catch issues early, and communicate technical work directly to clients.

We value ownership, mentorship, and mission-driven work that serves students and institutions. Ideal candidates bring 6+ years of web app experience in higher education, production Python backend work (preferably FastAPI), Docker, AWS, REST/GraphQL

Qualifications

• 6+ years of experience building and supporting web-based applications in higher education.
• Production Python backend experience, ideally with FastAPI.
• Experience with a major cloud provider (AWS preferred) and Docker.
• Experience designing RESTful and/or GraphQL APIs.
• Relational database experience, PostgreSQL preferred.
• Git and strong automated testing habits.
• Client-facing or consulting experience.
• Daily use of AI tools.

Responsibilities

• Own complex backend systems end-to-end—estimating scope, catching issues early, and representing technical work to clients.
• Collaborate with a close-knit engineering team and provide mentorship.
• Contribute to design decisions and ensure reliable, scalable backend services.
