Job summary

NAVFAC SOUTHWEST is seeking a HIGH VOLTAGE ELECTRICIAN in the PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT. The role emphasizes experience and training to perform duties at the required level, with a screen-out element for supervision.

You will work on distribution networks, wiring, and control circuits, often in challenging environments. Applicants must demonstrate knowledge and skill in high voltage electrical tasks and be able to interpret drawings.

Job description

You will serve as a HIGH VOLTAGE ELECTRICIAN in the PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT of NAVFAC SOUTHWEST.

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.

Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION.

Your resume must show that you have the ability to perform common tasks under general supervision including:

  1. Installing wire or cable distribution lines from public utility supply point to distribution substations
  2. Setting proper wire tension or sag in accordance with strength and weight of wire, length of span, and wire contraction and expansion in temperature changes
  3. Understanding drawings and diagrams of distribution network, equipment, and control circuits
PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Works above ground from aerial bucket trucks and poles, at ground level, and in trenches, or manholes. The employee may perform moderately heavy lifting, pulling, and carrying of equipment and material weighing up 40 pounds and occasionally, may lift or pull heavy cables
and equipment weighing more than 50 pounds with the help of weight handling equipment or with assistance from other workers. Uses block and tackle, pulleys, or other lifting devices. Crouches, stands, kneels, and stoops while installing, repairing, or testing electrical equipment in
confined spaces such as enclosed switch gear, or in structures such as overhead bus and conduit assemblies. Work requires bending, stooping, climbing, and standing for long periods while installing, repairing, and testing electrical equipment in manholes and on overhead distribution lines.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Works indoors and outdoors. May be exposed to danger from explosions of equipment and cables in manholes and vaults, as well as danger from high voltage electrical shock, burns from solder, broken bones, cuts, and bruises. May be exposed to heat and noise when working in substations or power-generating facilities, to extremes of weather when working outdoors, and to unpleasant odors and wet slippery surfaces when working in manholes. May be subject to electrical burns while working around high voltage electrical lines, broken bones from falls from
poles, and strains from awkward work positions. May be exposed to chemicals such as insulation oil from transformers and oil switches. May be required to wear protective devices such as earplugs, safety hats, and nonconductive gloves and footwear.
