Job summary

Hut 8 in Miami is seeking a qualified Electrical Engineer to join our High Voltage Engineering team to design and deliver HV substations and switchyards for data center campuses.

You will develop diagrams, protection philosophies, grounding, and equipment specs, and coordinate with utilities and EPCs through FAT and commissioning.

The ideal candidate has 5+ years of HV substation experience, familiarity with 34.5–345 kV projects, IEEE/ANSI/NESC, and a PE license or ability to obtain one.

Qualifications

• B.S. in Electrical Engineering required.
• Minimum 5 years of high-voltage substation engineering experience.
• Experience with 34.5 kV–345 kV substations and utility interconnections.
• Knowledge of IEEE, ANSI, NESC standards.
• Willingness to travel to job sites.

Responsibilities

• Develop electrical and physical design of high-voltage substations and switchyards (34.5 kV–345 kV).
• Create one-line diagrams, protection philosophies, grounding, layouts, and equipment specs.
• Prepare calculations: short-circuit, grounding, lightning protection, cable sizing, station service.
• Prepare design documents: general arrangements, elevations, grounding details, foundations, control building.
• Coordinate with utilities, EPC contractors, civil/structural teams; review vendor drawings; support FAT, commissioning.

We are expanding our High Voltage Engineering team to support the development of next-generation AI and high-performance computing data centers across North America.This is an opportunity to join a highly experienced engineering team responsible for the completetechnical design of utility interconnection substations and transmission switchyards that deliverhundreds of megawatts of reliable power to mission-critical data center campuses.You will play a key role in designing high-voltage infrastructure from concept throughcommissioning, working on projects ranging from 34.5 kV distribution substations to 345 kVtransmission switchyards.

Responsibilities

• Develop the electrical and physical design of high-voltage substations and switchyards(34.5 kV–345 kV)


• Develop one-line diagrams, protection philosophies, grounding systems, station layouts, and equipment specifications

If applicable, prepare engineering calculations including:

• Short-circuit studies


• Grounding analysis


• Lightning protection


• Cable sizing


• AC/DC station service

If applicable, prepare design documents including:

• Station General Arrangements


• Elevations and sectional views


• Grounding and conduit details


• Foundation and steel details


• Control building arrangements and details

Specify and coordinate major equipment including:

• Power transformers


• Gas circuit breakers


• Disconnect switches


• Instrument transformers


• Protection and control systems


• Coordinate with utilities, EPC contractors, civil, structural, transmission line, and protection engineers


• Review vendor drawings and provide technical guidance throughout procurement and construction


• Support factory acceptance testing (FAT), commissioning, and energization activities

About You

• B.S. in Electrical Engineering


• 5+ years of experience in high-voltage substation engineering


• Strong experience designing substations from 34.5 kV through 345 kV


• Experience with utility interconnections and transmission systems


• Knowledge of IEEE, ANSI, NESC, and applicable utility standards


• Experience with grounding design, protection coordination, and relay applications


• PE license preferred (or ability to obtain)


• Occasional travel to job site is required

Preferred Experience

Experience with one or more of the following:

• AI or hyperscale data centers


• Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)


• Transmission switchyards


• Substation electrical configurations


• Gas-insulated or air-insulated substations


• ETAP, CDEGS, ASPEN, or SKM


• AutoCAD, and Bluebeam
