Job summary

The Dallas Morning News is seeking a fall High School Sports Intern for our SportsDay team to cover high school football and other sports. You will work with our award-winning sports staff on a mix of daily and enterprise stories, primarily football, with chances to cover college and professional sports.

Weekend work is required. Applicants should submit a cover letter and résumé with references, plus no more than five published clips (include username/password if links are provided).

Qualifications

• Strong writing and editing skills are required.
• At least one internship in sports media is preferred.
• Candidates should have strong news judgment and verbal/analytic abilities.

Responsibilities

• Cover high school football and volleyball games.
• Write weekly posts on teams, games and players to watch.
• Pitch and write features and enterprise or trend pieces on high school sports.
• Take photos and videos using a phone at events.
• Maintain an active presence on social media.
• Cover college and professional sports events when opportunities arise.
• Work nights, weekends and occasional holidays as dictated by the news cycle.

Join our SportsDay team as a fall intern covering high school football and other sports.

The intern will be a member of The Dallas Morning News’ award-winning sports staff. Reporting assignments will be a mix of daily and enterprise coverage, mostly high school football, but there will be opportunities to cover college and professional sports, as well as general assignment news. Weekend work is required. A cover letter and résumé with references are required with all applications. What will you do?

• Cover high school football and volleyball games
• Write weekly posts on teams, games and players to watch
• Pitch and write features and enterprise or trend pieces on high school sports

• Cover college and professional sporting events, such as the State Fair Classic, the Red River Rivalry and Dallas Cowboys, Mavericks, Stars and Wings games.
• Work nights, weekends and occasional holidays as dictated by the news cycle

What will it take to be successful?
