Job summary

Riverheads High School in Staunton, VA seeks a School Counselor to perform counseling duties for students and support the guidance program for the 2026-27 school year. Reports to the Principal; the position is Exempt and 210 days.

The counselor will coordinate scheduling, testing programs, orientation for new students, and collaboration with parents, staff, and community partners to promote student growth and achievement.

Qualifications

• Meet state certification guidelines for guidance counseling.
• Ability to coordinate programs and provide student counseling.
• Maintain student records and confidentiality.

Responsibilities

• Performs counseling duties for students.
• Coordinates scholarship programs, as needed.
• Coordinates standardized testing programs, as needed.
• Coordinates orientation programs for new students.
• Assists all homebound students.
• Assists administrators with master scheduling, student course registration, course changes, etc.
• Coordinates various special programs throughout the school year as assigned.
• Performs general guidance counselor duties/responsibilities for assigned student caseload.
• Uses counseling techniques to advance student learning and self-awareness in individual and/or group academic counseling sessions.
• Provides consultation to staff, parents, and community agency personnel in order to foster student learning.
• Assists students and parents to plan a program of studies which is consistent with students’ individual abilities, interests, and career goals.
• Organizes and interprets the results of the school’s testing program.
• Establishes and maintains open lines of communication with students, parents, and colleagues concerning both the academic and behavioral progress of all students.
• Establishes and maintains cooperative professional relations with others.
• Performs related duties as assigned by the administration in accordance with the school/system policies and practices.
