Position SummaryThis position will be part of an educational system focused on developing the skills and talents of all students through rigorous learning experiences, supportive relationships, and relevant real-life applications.
Assists the building principal in organizing and fostering a positive, safe environment that is conducive to best meeting the needs of all students, staff and parents. This includes such responsibilities as: leading, directing, counseling, and supervising a variety of personnel and programs; creating effective parent, teacher, and child communications; supporting, encouraging, mentoring, and evaluating staff; fostering teamwork between teachers and among staff and parents; and managing budget items. The assistant principal acts in the capacity of the principal during the principal’s absence from the school. Reports directly to the building principal.
Supervisory RelationshipThe building principal supervises the assistant principal, who supervises licensed teachers and support staff as assigned.
Minimum QualificationsEarned Master’s Degree in Education or a related field from an accredited college or university.Must hold or be able to obtain an Administrative certificate.Minimum of five (5) years successful teaching experience.Preferred QualificationsThree years related administrative experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience, including a demonstrated commitment to a positive learning environment and a strong commitment to educational equity.Effective communication, collaborative, and interpersonal skills.Effective skills in planning, organizing, and coordinating activities.Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills.Knowledge and understanding of District policies, regulations, procedures, and standards.Knowledge and understanding of state educational requirements and legal implications.Demonstrated experience in team leadership.Demonstrated knowledge of current District curricular initiatives.Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesStrong decision-making, analytical and organizational skills.Advanced skill in dealing with students and staff with diverse needs at various levels.Knowledge of varied instructional strategies, how to support the needs of diverse learners, delivery methods, assessment, and staff development techniques for improvement of instruction.Intermediate to advanced knowledge of, and ability to, develop, monitor and evaluate curriculum, discipline plans and supervision/safety plans.Knowledge of understanding of adolescent physical, emotional, and intellectual development.Ability to promote and follow Board and Administrative policies, and building and department procedures.Ability to communicate, interact and work effectively and cooperatively with all people, including those from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds. Ability to contribute to cultural diversity for educational enrichment.Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate administrator.Excellent interpersonal relations and oral and written communication skills.Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from parents, administrators, community stakeholders, etc.Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.Knowledge of curriculum design, planning, development, implementation and evaluation, assessment processes and how they should operate in an effective school.Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with students, school personnel, parents, vendors, peers and other stakeholders.Ability to use tact, patience and courtesy when dealing with others.Ability to understand and be sensitive to those of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.Qualify for a Standard First Aid and CPR certificate.Possess physical and mental stamina commensurate with responsibilities of the position.Performance Responsibilities (Essential Functions)To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Demonstrate regular and consistent attendance and punctuality.Assist the principal in the discharge of his/her duties at all times and acts in the capacity of the principal during the principal’s absence from the school.Assist in the selection, training and implementation of District programs and initiatives.Assist in the supervision and evaluation of licensed and classified staff for the purpose of ensuring that quality is maintained and performance is maximized.Assist with: recommendation and orientation of new staff members to the teaching environment at the high school, especially as it relates to the area of students, personnel policy, procedures and general building practices; planning and directing meetings, staff development, trainings and in-services; communications; listening, providing and receiving feedback, and providing encouragement for all staff.Assist in the promotion of positive school climate and staff morale through recognition programs and honoring those who excel.Assist in the role of instructional leader to promote student behavior that is supportive and conducive to the implementation of the school’s instructional programs.Assist with selection, scheduling and implementation of instructional materials; analyze test data; determine ways to improve instruction and student results.Assist in implementing instructional strategies, including supporting the needs of diverse learners, delivery methods, assessment, and staff development for improvement of instruction.Facilitate meetings, processes, etc. for the purpose of meeting curriculum guidelines and/or ensuring that state mandates are implemented.Assist with student orientation; counseling; discipline; due process; data gathering; student recognition; and securing student services with outside agencies.Assume responsibility for implementing discipline procedures as stated in the Student Handbook. Work through concerns and classroom management.Support teachers who have students with behavior issues and support substitute teachers in carrying out their duties.Organize and direct cafeteria supervision during lunch periods.Conduct search and seizures, work with law enforcement and enforce District discipline policies.Cooperate with the juvenile court system and social service agencies.Develop innovative strategies, preventative approaches, and proactive plans for students who exhibit at-risk behaviors.Act in a supportive role with the principal in working with parents, teachers, and the community to promote the effective flow of communications and ensure positive relations with parents, business leaders and community members. Listen and respond to parent concerns with sensitivity.Facilitate communication between personnel, students and/or parents for the purpose of evaluating situations, solving problems and/or resolving conflicts.Assist in organizing parent conferences, back-to-school nights and other times when staff is available to parents to discuss their child’s learning and behavior. Promote good school-parent relationships when discussing specific student issues with parents.Maintain accurate student attendance records and strive to promote good student attendance.Implement co-curricular activities, including athletics, athletic supervision and clubs.Work in conjunction with the principal in supervising all school activities, i.e., field trips, orientation programs, assemblies, plays, musicals, and other special events.Attend after-school activities and conduct parent and student meetings as appropriate. Represent the principal in his/her absence.Work with teachers and students to promote building maintenance and cleanliness. Assist in supervision of custodial staff; creating and implementing safety and crisis response plans; maintaining facility and equipment.Promote school safety by implementing safety drills for fire, lockdown, etc. Provides first aid and CPR if needed.Assists with developing the master schedule.Assist the principal with developing and managing the school budget and implementation of Human Resources policies.Attend conferences, workshops and meetings to remain informed regarding current practices and trends in education. Attend meetings of the school site council, advisory committees, etc. as requested beyond the regular workday.Perform related duties consistent with job description and assignment.Perform other duties that may be assigned by the Superintendent.Essential RequirementsThe physical demands, work environment factors, and mental functions described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outdoor conditions. The employee may be required to travel between District facilities using personal transportation. The employee may be required to work non-traditional hours based on District needs. Workdays may extend beyond normal working hours and may include some weekends.
Mental Functions: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to communicate and use interpersonal skills, compare, copy, coordinate, instruct and negotiate. The employee is occasionally required to evaluate, analyze, compute, compile and synthesize.
Cognitive Ability: While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to communicate effectively with all stakeholders (administration, teachers, parents, students, community, etc.). The employee must be able to organize and prioritize multiple tasks, exercise good judgment and make decisions.
