Sierra Vista Unified School District invites applications for an Athletics - High School/Assistant Coach position at Buena High School for the 2026-2027 school year.

You will support the Varsity Coach, implement PBIS strategies, maintain safety and records, and help student-athletes develop skills, discipline and sportsmanship in line with AIA/NFHS guidelines. The position is on-site with supplemental pay and district support for coaching certification.

Qualifications

  • NFHS Level I certification required.
  • NFHS course on Bullying, Hazing and Inappropriate Behaviors completed.
  • CPR/First Aid certification required.
  • Arizona IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card required.
  • Arizona teaching or coaching certificate is optional.

Responsibilities

  • Coach individual participants in sport-specific skills and development.
  • Plan and schedule regular in-season practice sessions.
  • Maintain attendance, insurance records, and related paperwork.
  • Oversee safety conditions of facilities during activities and events.
  • Enforce discipline and sportsmanship at all times.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Ability to obtain the National Federation of State High School Associations Level I Certification
  • Ability to successfully complete theNFHS course titled "Bullying, Hazing and Inappropriate Behaviors"
  • Ability to obtain CPR/First Aid Certification
  • Ability to obtain a valid Arizona IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card
  • Valid Arizona Teaching Certificate or Arizona Coaching Certificate - optional
  • Knowledge, skill and or experience in the implementation of Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS) strategies or be willing to receive training in those strategies as applicable.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Utilize, with fidelity, the District Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) program at the building level.
  • Ensure information obtained through the course of duties associated with this position is held in the highest of confidentiality.
  • Perform all duties in accordance with Federal and State laws, district procedures and Board policies; including mandatory reporting procedures.

To help each participating student achieve a high level of skill, an appreciation for the values of discipline and sportsmanship, and an increased level of self-esteem.

POSITION SUMMARY

The assistant coach will work under the management of the Varsity Coach for their respective sport. Each coach must work within the framework of the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) to provide leadership in the ongoing development and improvement of student athletes in their sport through coordinating, planning, evaluation, and implementation of programs. All coaches have the responsibility of carrying on their respective sport within the best interest of Sierra Vista Unified School District and its students within the bounds of the rules set forth by the AIA and the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS).The coach must demonstrate and apply leadership, integrity, responsibility, self-control, and knowledge of rules and regulations at all times. It is necessary and important that the coach act in a responsible and professional manner. The coach must set a good example and provide a healthy lifestyle.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Coach individual participants in the skills necessary for excellent achievement in the sport involved.
  • Plan and schedule a regular program of practice in season.
  • Maintain necessary attendance forms, insurance records, and similar paperwork.
  • Oversee the safety conditions of the facility or area in which assigned sport is conducted at all times that students are present.
  • Enforce discipline and sportsmanlike behavior at all times and overseepenalties for breach of such standards by individual students.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

The Assistant Coach reports to the Varsity Coach and the Assistant Principal of Athletics/Activities. The Assistant Coach will interact cooperatively with all other staff positions. All elements of good human relations will be practiced.
