Job summary

UnityPoint Health is seeking a Hemodialysis Technician to work under RN supervision, providing direct, high-impact patient care during dialysis treatments. You will operate dialysis equipment, monitor patient condition, and maintain safety and quality standards in a patient-centered environment.

Individual will document observations, assist with vascular access and treatment protocols, and support families throughout the care process in a fast-paced unit.

Qualifications

• High school graduate or GED required.
• Dialysis Technician certification within 18 months of hire.
• Current BLS certification or obtain within 3 months of hire.
• Six months dialysis experience required.

Responsibilities

• Receives patient into treatment area and performs patient data collection and documents on flow sheets.
• Monitors and documents status of vascular accesses using cannulation or CVC techniques per regulations.
• Documents patient observations and seeks guidance when levels are out of range for hospitalized dialysis patients.
• Monitors and documents vital signs on flow sheet; administers fluids or other treatments as directed.
• Obtains blood specimens as defined for the work area.
• Sets up and monitors dialysis machines and RO water system; responds to alarms and performs safety checks.

Responsibilities

• Receivespatientinto treatment/exam area and performs patient data collectionanddocuments on flow sheets.


• Monitors and documents status of vascular accesses using proper cannulation or central venous catheter (“CVC”) techniquesin accordance withstate, federal, and local regulations.


• Documents patient observations andseeksguidance when levels are out of normal range for hospitalized dialysis patients.


• Monitors and documents onUnityPointapproved flow sheet the patient vital signs applicable to critically ill patients, administers fluid therapy or otherappropriate treatmentsas directed, documents activities appropriately perUnityPointpolicy and / or state regulations


• Obtains adequate blood specimensas defined inworkarea.


• Set ups and monitors dialysis machines and reverses osmosis (“RO”) water system for correct functioning, responds to visual and audible alarms and makes appropriate adjustments before, during and after the dialysis treatment, performs safety checks as directed by the registered nurse prior to, during and following dialysis treatment.


• Prime dialyzers,obtainsdialysate, andmonitorthe delivery system during treatments using all alarm systems, settings, andappropriate tests.


• Reviews dialysis prescription, notes general physical and mental condition of patient through observation and interview,documentsobservations.


• Initiates dialysis via approved accesses using proper cannulation or central venous catheter (“CVC”) techniquesin accordance withstate, federal, and local regulations.

Qualifications

Education:

• High School Graduate or GED equivalent.

License(s)/Certification(s):

• Dialysis Technician certification within18 monthsof hire.


• Must possess and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or obtain certification within three (3) months from date of hire.

Experience:

• Six monthsdialysis experience.

Other:

• Level 3 Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
