Job summary

Antech Diagnostics, part of Mars Science & Diagnostics, seeks a Hematology Technician IV for our New York laboratory to perform analyses, prepare samples, run tests and release results with accuracy in a high-volume operation. The role requires a BS in Biology or MLT with at least 2 years reading abnormal differentials.

Shift is Tue–Sun, 1:00 AM to 9:30 AM, with a weekday off. Target pay is $30.05 per hour, plus comprehensive benefits.

Qualifications

  • BS Degree in Biology or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or equivalent.
  • 2 years’ experience reading abnormal differentials in high volume operations.

Responsibilities

  • Sets up and runs lab tests.
  • Reads and releases test results.
  • Reads CBC, Avian and Exotic slides; reads UA slides at 45 per hour, bacteria/path review at 50 per hour.
  • Builds hematology and UA loads.
  • Performs QA quality control and instrument maintenance.

Work Shift: Tuesday - Sunday 1:00 AM to 9:30 AM with a day-off during the week.

Purpose of Job

The Hematology Technician IV performs laboratory analyses and tests. Prepares samples, sets up instruments, runs tests and reads, interprets and releases results.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Sets up and runs lab tests
  • Read and releases test results
  • Read all manual CBC, Avian and Exotic slides
  • Read UA slides at a minimum rate of 45 per hour, bacteria and path review slides at a rate of 50 slides per hour
  • Build hematology and UA loads
  • Perform all required quality control per QA guidelines including all instrument maintenance and temperature charts
  • Find missing specimens
  • Print and reconcile queue list
  • May assist with training new hires
  • Knowledge of lab equipment and procedures
  • Awareness of quality control and calibration
  • Cross-train and develop knowledge of multiple specialties within department/lab
  • Applies job skills and lab policies and procedures to complete a variety of tasks
  • Reads, understands and follows applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's), including safety and quality procedures
  • Maintains clean and organized work area
  • Restocks supplies as needed
  • Participates in improving lab efficiency, quality, and cooperation
  • Consult with senior peers on non-complex Hematology tasks to learn through experience
  • May be asked to participate in enterprise initiatives, special projects, and other duties as assigned

Education / Experience

BS Degree in Biology or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or equivalent, with 2 years’ experience reading abnormal differentials in high volume operations.

  • Laboratory skills, with experience setting up, running and operating lab instruments preferred but not required
  • Knowledge of medical and laboratory terminology and Parasitology procedures and equipment helpful
  • General science background

  • Positive, can-do attitude
  • Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) as appropriate

Physical Demands
  • Extensive standing, phone, and computer use
  • Capable of standing continuously for up to 2 hours
  • Extend and reach with hands and arms and use hands and fingers
  • Occasionally required to bend, kneel, stoop, or crouch
  • May be required to lift, move, and carry up to 20 lbs.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
  • Hearing ability to effectively communicate via the telephone and in person
  • Ability to communicate verbally on the phone and in person
  • Fluency in the English language
  • Extended hours may be needed
Work Environment

Laboratory environment with potential biohazards present. Normally receives general instructions on routine work, detailed instructions on new assignments. Work under close to moderate supervision with limited latitude for independent judgment. Potential for exposure to agents known to cause zoonotic disease in humans and use of potentially hazardous chemicals as defined by the National Hazard Communication Standards.
