Job summary

HHDC in Chicago seeks a Full-Time Helper A to maintain cleanliness, safety, and the general condition of residential properties. The role covers janitorial work, basic maintenance, unit turnovers, groundskeeping, and emergency response.

Schedule is 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday with on-call shifts. Pay rate is $27.23 per hour. Candidates need a high school diploma, at least 3 years’ maintenance experience, ability to lift 50 pounds, and valid hand tools.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent is required.
• Minimum of 3 years of relevant maintenance experience, preferably in residential or apartment settings.
• Knowledge of basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, and general maintenance.
• Must have or obtain UPCS and union certifications.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
• Must provide required hand tools.
• Reliable transportation, insurance, and safe driving record.
• Willingness to travel between properties as needed.

Responsibilities

• Complete maintenance and janitorial assignments as directed by management.
• Participate in the rotational on-call schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
• Perform basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, and general repairs.
• Complete work orders and preventive maintenance.
• Inspect units, buildings, common areas, and grounds for maintenance needs.
• Assist with apartment turnovers and move-in/move-out inspections.
• Clean hallways, offices, laundry rooms, basements, vacant units, and other common areas.
• Assist with groundskeeping, lawn care, gardening, and snow removal.
• Replace or repair locks, screens, fixtures, appliances, lighting, and other property items.
• Maintain knowledge of water and gas shutoffs and sewer cleanouts.
• Follow company, OSHA, and applicable safety requirements.
• Assist at other properties when needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL & WORK REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to stand, walk, bend, squat, climb, crawl, and lift up to 50 pounds. Work may be performed indoors and outdoors in varying weather and property conditions. Regular attendance and participation in the on-call rotation are required.
