Position Summary

The Residential Helper position is a physically demanding job. Helpers assist drivers with providing safe, courteous, and complete waste removal for customers.

Shift: 4:00am - 6:00pm M-F

Responsibilities

• Provide waste or recycling removal services to customers on assigned route(s) by emptying trash/recycling receptacles (weighing up to 75 pounds each from the ground approximately 300-500 times per day) into the truck in a safe and compliant manner.
• Enter and exit the truck multiple times per day and/or ride on the back step of a truck to service 600-1,000 stops per day.
• Replace trash/recycling receptacles neatly at the curb or designated area.
• Clean up waste spills and overflows.
• Work with multiple drivers depending on workloads.
• Operate packing mechanism and various lever/handles on truck to activate lifting/loading mechanism.
• Assist driver in safely backing up the truck by directing the driver from outside the truck.
• Assist in unloading or cleaning truck as needed.
• Professionally interact with internal and external customers.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position will not manage employees.

Skills & Abilities

• Ability to learn and understand truck mechanics.
• Good written and verbal communication skills to communicate effectively and professionally with internal and external customers.
• Must be able to communicate in English well enough to understand, and respond to questions, directions, traffic signs, signals, and safety training.
• Additional skills may be required to perform specific tasks depending on work location, department or line of business.

Experience & Knowledge

• Waste industry experience preferred.

Physical Requirements

• Frequently lift/carry a maximum of 75 lbs.
• Continuously push/pull a maximum of 75 lbs.
• Rarely lift/carry/push/pull a maximum of 100 lbs.
• Continuously work outside in changing temperatures, wet/humid conditions.
• Continuously work in areas of dust, odors, mist, gases, and other airborne matter.
• Frequently stoop/kneel/crouch/crawl.
• Frequently climb and/or balance.
• Frequently sit/stand/walk.

Additional Working Conditions

• Possible exposure to high traffic conditions and/or tight driving areas.
• Exposure to residential and commercial waste.
• Ability to travel between offices as required.
• Ability to work flexible hours; expected to work nights and weekends as needed.
• Ability to work overtime, weekends, and/or holidays.
• Legally eligible to work in the United States.
• Valid driver’s license (if applicable).
• Must successfully complete pre‑employment testing.
• Must be able to read and speak English.
