Job summary

The Brotherhood Synagogue in New York is seeking a warm Educational Programming Assistant to support our Hebrew School and family education programs. Job description

The Brotherhood Synagogue is seeking a warm, organized, and dependable Educational Programming Assistant to support our Hebrew School and family education programs. This part‑time position is ideal for someone who enjoys working with children, thrives in a collaborative environment, and is committed to creating a welcoming, engaging, and safe environment for students and families. This role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on our synagogue community while supporting both the day‑to‑day operation of the school and its special programs throughout the year.

Position Details
  • Schedule: 3 days per week (Monday‑Wednesday afternoons from approximately 2:30‑6:30pm).
  • Hours: 10–15 hours per week.
  • Additional Availability: Some evenings and weekends are required to support synagogue events.
Responsibilities
  • Welcome and supervise students, ensuring a safe and positive environment.
  • Maintain daily attendance and oversee student arrival, dismissal, and authorized early pick‑ups.
  • Substitute teach as needed and support teachers with classroom and administrative tasks.
  • Assist with the planning and execution of special programs and events, including holiday celebrations, the Purim Carnival, and Shabbat dinners.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of the Hebrew School program.
Qualifications
  • Experience working with children in an educational, camp, synagogue, or youth program setting preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to supervise children in both classroom and recreational settings.
  • Comfortable leading a class independently as a substitute teacher when needed.
  • Dependable, punctual, flexible, and able to work collaboratively with faculty and staff.
  • Commitment to maintaining student safety, professionalism, and confidentiality.
Salary

$30‑40 hourly (commensurate with experience)

The Brotherhood Synagogue, located on Gramercy Park, is the largest Jewish congregation in downtown New York City with 800 households and approximately 150 children in the Hebrew school. It is an independent, progressive community following the Conservative tradition, honoring the spiritual and ethical heritage of the Jewish faith while celebrating the diverse commitment of its membership. Brotherhood offers a warm, welcoming atmosphere that supports a variety of synagogue activities, prayer, celebrations, education, adult classes, and community outreach programs.
