Job summary

City of Indianapolis is seeking a Heavy Equipment Mechanic to maintain and repair a range of city-owned machinery. The role requires inspecting, testing, dismantling, and reassembling diesel-powered equipment, with emphasis on electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical systems.

The candidate must have a high school diploma or GED, a valid Class B CDL (or obtain within 180 days), and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Work includes field travel and after-hours duties as needed.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Valid CDL with Class B endorsement or must obtain one within 180 days.
• Working knowledge of equipment used for diesel engine testing.
• Thorough knowledge of electrical, hydraulic and mechanical air systems.
• Ability to read operating and service manuals and follow written instructions.
• Ability to operate and test all equipment and repair rolling stock.
• Must have mandatory hand tools and be able to lift up to 50 lbs.

Responsibilities

• Inspect equipment for wear, breakage and malfunctions of assemblies like hoists and drives.
• Use specialized testing equipment to localize faults.
• Dismantle and inspect power transmission and hoist components.
• Recondition and assemble mechanical and hydraulic systems.
• Operate precision measuring devices and shop tools.
• Test operate equipment and provide final inspections, training, and support.
