Job Description

Under general supervision, performs skilled work in operating specialized vehicles and heavy equipment used by the Public Works Department for maintaining city utilities or water/sewer systems.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Operates specialized vehicles and heavy equipment for city utilities maintenance, varying by assignment and skill.
2. Operates a range of equipment including front-end loaders, dump trucks, bulldozers, etc., following safety regulations.
3. Performs construction, maintenance, and repair work such as digging, sewer and water line work.
4. Maintains and inspects vehicles and equipment, reporting mechanical issues.
5. Hauls materials and transports vehicles/equipment to sites.
6. Performs traffic control and emergency safety tasks.
7. Completes work orders, logs, and reports.
8. Cross-trains team members on safety and work methods.
9. Responds to emergencies outside normal hours.
10. Adheres to city rules, maintains professionalism, and ensures accountability.
11. Cooperates with colleagues to accomplish tasks efficiently.
12. Maintains regular attendance; attendance affects employment.
13. Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or GED; two years experience operating heavy vehicles and maintenance equipment.

Licenses/Certifications:

• Valid Texas Commercial Driver’s License or obtain one within a year.
• Water or Wastewater Operator licenses from TCEQ or obtain within a year.

Knowledge:

• City policies, repair methods, safety rules, traffic laws, chemical handling, customer service.

Skills:

• Using tools and heavy equipment safely, troubleshooting, manual labor, following instructions, teamwork.

Physical Demands:

Indoor and outdoor work, moderate physical effort, lifting up to 80 pounds.
