Job Description
Under general supervision, performs skilled work in operating specialized vehicles and heavy equipment used by the Public Works Department for maintaining city utilities or water/sewer systems.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Operates specialized vehicles and heavy equipment for city utilities maintenance, varying by assignment and skill.
- Operates a range of equipment including front-end loaders, dump trucks, bulldozers, etc., following safety regulations.
- Performs construction, maintenance, and repair work such as digging, sewer and water line work.
- Maintains and inspects vehicles and equipment, reporting mechanical issues.
- Hauls materials and transports vehicles/equipment to sites.
- Performs traffic control and emergency safety tasks.
- Completes work orders, logs, and reports.
- Cross-trains team members on safety and work methods.
- Responds to emergencies outside normal hours.
- Adheres to city rules, maintains professionalism, and ensures accountability.
- Cooperates with colleagues to accomplish tasks efficiently.
- Maintains regular attendance; attendance affects employment.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED; two years experience operating heavy vehicles and maintenance equipment.
Licenses/Certifications:
- Valid Texas Commercial Driver’s License or obtain one within a year.
- Water or Wastewater Operator licenses from TCEQ or obtain within a year.
Knowledge:
- City policies, repair methods, safety rules, traffic laws, chemical handling, customer service.
Skills:
- Using tools and heavy equipment safely, troubleshooting, manual labor, following instructions, teamwork.
Physical Demands:
Indoor and outdoor work, moderate physical effort, lifting up to 80 pounds.
