Job summary

Job description

The Heavy Equipment Operator II is responsible for advanced operation of heavy construction equipment and utility vehicles in support of underground utility installation projects. This role requires extensive experience, technical expertise, and the ability to lead crews in the safe and efficient completion of complex excavation and construction tasks. Level 2 operators serve as mentors to junior operators and ensure compliance with company and industry safety standards.

Essential Functions
  • Operates a broad range of heavy equipment including excavators, bulldozers, trenchers, graders, cranes, and directional drills.
  • Leads crews in excavation, trenching, conduit placement, and fiber optic cable installation.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints, utility maps, and construction drawings to execute work plans.
  • Provides on-the-job training and guidance to Level 1 operators and laborers.
  • Conducts site assessments, identifies hazards, and ensures compliance with OSHA and company safety standards.
  • Performs routine inspection, troubleshooting, and minor repairs on assigned equipment; reports major defects to supervisor.
  • Coordinates with project managers and engineers to ensure project timelines and quality standards are met.
  • Maintains accurate records of equipment use, maintenance, and project progress.
  • Ensures proper loading, hauling, and unloading of equipment and materials.
Pay Range:

$ 25.00 to $29.00 per hour, based upon geography, skills, and experience.
This position is non-exempt and eligible for overtime pay in accordance with federal and state laws.

Position Requirements:
  • Minimum 1 years of experience operating heavy equipment in utility or construction environments.
  • Proven ability to operate multiple types of heavy machinery beyond entry-level equipment.
  • Valid driver’s license with safe driving record; CDL preferred.
  • OSHA certifications and/or specialized equipment certifications strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of underground utility installation, fiber optic placement, and conduit systems.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to supervise and mentor crews.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound decisions in the field.
  • Strong communication skills with ability to interact effectively with coworkers, supervisors, and clients.
  • Willingness to travel to multiple worksites as required .
Physical Requirements
  • Frequent sitting in machinery, often in vibrating environments.
  • Climbing and balancing to enter/exit large equipment.
  • Lifting and carrying up to 80 pounds when handling tools, parts, or materials.
  • Regular overhead and shoulder-level reaching to operate controls or perform maintenance.
  • Forceful pushing and pulling motions when operating levers and controls.
  • Exposure to outdoor elements including heat, cold, and precipitation.
  • Use of protective gear including steel-toe boots, gloves, hard hats, hearing protection, and safety vests.
  • Sustained physical and mental endurance for long shifts (often 10+ hours).
