Join to apply for the Heavy Equipment Operator (Demolition) role at VEIT

The Heavy Equipment Operator will operate various types of power construction equipment, such as motor graders, bulldozers, scrapers, compressors, pumps, derricks, shovels, tractors, or front-end loaders to excavate, move, and grade earth, erect structures, or pour concrete or other hard surface pavement. May also repair and maintain equipment as needed.

A Day in the Life

• Operate heavy equipment of various sizes and weights used in site or highway construction.
• Follow company and OSHA safety procedures, reporting issues to the project Foreman, Superintendent, or Safety Director.
• Perform routine inspections and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment, referring defects or repairs to the appropriate personnel.
• Assist in training entry-level employees in maintenance and repair duties.
• Identify underground and overhead utilities before excavating.
• Review trenching requirements with the Superintendent and ensure safety measures are in place.
• Keep management informed of actions that may affect project success or operations.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent, with 6-12 months of construction equipment operation experience, or equivalent education and experience.
• Knowledge of heavy equipment operating principles and ability to operate equipment under varying conditions.
• Understanding of hazards and safety precautions related to heavy equipment.
• OSHA 10, First Aid/CPR certification, and the ability to follow safety training protocols.
• Ability to read and interpret grade stakes and site plans.
• Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
• Mathematical skills including fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.
• Dependability to meet attendance requirements.

Additional Requirements

• Pass a pre-employment drug test.
• Willingness to travel as needed.
• At least 18 years old.
• Union affiliation or willingness to join the union.
• Ability to work 8-12 hour days, Monday through Friday, with occasional weekends, including evenings.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

Must be able to perform manual work requiring physical exertion, lifting up to 50 pounds, and exposure to weather and variable terrain conditions.

The work environment involves exposure to loud noises, machinery, and outdoor weather conditions.
