Job summary

CHERRYLAKE, INC. seeks a Heavy Equipment Operator to operate heavy machinery safely for constructing and maintaining farm roads, irrigation lines, and related projects. You will inspect, maintain, and safely store equipment while supporting other farm operations and safety protocols.

The role requires 2+ years of experience, a valid driver’s license, and the ability to work independently. CDL/MVR benefits and certifications are preferred but not mandatory.

Qualifications

• Two or more years of recent experience operating heavy equipment in road, highway or farming settings.
• Ability to operate heavy equipment safely and efficiently.
• Mechanically inclined with knowledge of large and small equipment.
• High School grad or GED preferred.
• Literacy to interpret equipment manuals.
• Able to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Irrigation experience, possible electrical exposure.
• Valid Driver’s License and clean MVR.
• CDL license a plus.
• Heavy Equipment Operator Certification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Operate heavy equipment safely and efficiently to construct and maintain farm roads and irrigation work sites.
• Inspect equipment daily and report mechanical or safety issues to shop personnel.
• Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment.
• Mow and maintain nursery areas and right-of-ways as assigned.
• Maintain safe road rights of way and drainage performance.
• Plan, organize and execute duties with minimal supervision.
• Follow workplace safety practices and company policies.
• Assist with other farm operations as needed.
• All other duties assigned.

Heavy Equipment Operator

JOB SUMMARY

Responsible for operating heavy equipment in a safe and effective manner. Heavy equipment may include trucks, front-end loaders, backhoe, dozers, graders, compactors, tractors and other pieces of equipment. Involved in the construction of primary and secondary farm roads (private roads), irrigation pipelines or similar projects. Maintaining and securing all equipment is in safe working order and reports any mechanical or safety issues to the mechanic shop. Perform other farm operations tasks as needed within facilities maintenance.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & ACCOUNTABILITIES

• Construction of primary and secondary farm roads. Use equipment to level road and ensure proper drainage.
• Ensure that primary and secondary passage roads are safe and adequately maintained to handle farm traffic.
• Retrieve, move and spread road construction material including rock, clay and sand.
• Maintain right of way roads through the appropriate use of grading and rotating techniques.
• Inspects roads daily to determine repair needs.
• Using various types of equipment to mow and maintain designated areas of the nursery and right of ways.
• Maintaining and securing all equipment is in safe working order and report any mechanical or safety issues to the mechanic shop.
• Perform daily safety and maintenance checks.
• Clean heavy equipment as scheduled and/or required.
• Ensure heavy equipment is safely and securely stored.
• Practice workplace safety.
• All other duties assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Two or more years of recent experience operating heavy equipment preferably in road or highway construction, or farming activities.
• Ability to operate heavy equipment machinery in a safe and efficient manner.
• Mechanically inclined, some working knowledge of small and large heavy equipment.
• High School grad or GED equivalent preferred.
• Literacy skills to interpret equipment manuals.
• Able to work independently, plan, organize and function with minimal amount of supervision.
• Irrigation experience. Possibly some electrical.
• Valid Driver’s License and clean MVR record.
• Heavy Equipment Operator Certification preferred.
• A CDL license is a plus.

HOURS OF WORK

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 40+ hours per week. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

• Regular seating, bending and stretching.
• Lift and transfer objects up to and over 75 lbs regularly.
• Able to sit, stand, bend and walk for long periods of time during the day and night.
• Able to drive and operate heavy equipment such as front end loader, dump truck, skid steer or other heavy equipment.
• Exposure to outside climate, including extreme heat and cold conditions.
• Manual dexterity and fine motor skills to effectively use small hand tools, power tools, & equipment.
