Job summary

Granite Construction Incorporated in Tucson, AZ, seeks a Heavy Equipment Operator to safely and efficiently operate Dozers, Motorgraders, Excavators, Backhoes, and other equipment in support of construction projects.

The role requires knowledge of earthwork and road construction, with a preference for prior heavy equipment experience and the ability to work day, swing, and night shifts in varying weather conditions.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED or equivalent years of experience, preferred.
• Prior experience operating heavy equipment in a construction environment.
• Knowledge of earthwork, road and highway construction is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Safely operate heavy equipment to excavate, move, load and grade earth, rock, gravel, and other materials.
• Perform road building, fine grading, finishing, sloping, banking, backfilling, demolition, trenching, and related tasks.
• Operate equipment in accordance with safety policies and procedures.
• Ensure equipment operation stays within capabilities and limitations.
• Complete required safety inspections and documentation.
• Maintain a clean and safe job site.
• Perform other duties as required.

General Summary

The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating various pieces of heavy mobile equipment including but are not limited to Dozers, Motorgraders, Excavators, Backhoes, Compaction Equipment, Scrapers, and Wheel Loaders in support of safe and efficient completion of construction projects.

Essential Job Accountabilities

• Safely operate heavy equipment to excavate, move, load and grade earth, rock, gravel, and other materials.
• Perform various activities including but not limited to road building, fine grading, finishing, sloping, banking, backfilling, demolition, ditching, loading, excavating, stockpiling, road surface maintenance, building and maintaining road berms, loading trucks, and trenching.
• Operate heavy equipment in accordance with the company’s safety policies and procedures.
• Ensure operation of equipment is within capabilities and limitations.
• Perform required safety inspections and complete documentation.
• Maintain a clean and safe job site.
• Perform other duties as required.

Education

• High School Diploma, GED or equivalent years of experience, preferred.

Work Experience

• Prior experience operating heavy equipment in a construction environment.
• Knowledge of earthwork, road and highway construction is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Ability to operate equipment within designated area with attention to detail.
• Ability to work, day, swing, and night shifts (occasionally extended hours).
• Ability to work in constant exposure to outside elements, in all weather conditions.
• Ability to work in safety sensitive construction setting, including exposure to moving machinery and heavy equipment.
• Ability to work collaboratively with a team in a fast-paced and complex environment.
• Ability to squat, crawl, and work in awkward positions/confined spaces.

Physical Demands

• Physical dexterity, stamina, and excellent hand-eye coordination with ability to: grasp, assemble, and lift objects, stand, sit, and walk for extended periods over uneven surfaces, squat, bend, climb ladders onto equipment or other objects, and potentially lie down.
• Lifting, pushing, pulling of heavy items weighing up to 50 lbs. or more.
