Job summary

City of Memphis is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator in the Public Works Division to perform major earth work, bridge repair, and sewer/drain construction. You will operate diverse heavy machinery, conduct daily inspections, and support mechanics while maintaining equipment and moving materials on site.

Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent, 3 years of experience with heavy equipment, and a valid Class B CDL.

  • Valid Class B Tennessee CDL required.
  • Must comply with Federal DOT Alcohol and Drug testing rules.

Responsibilities

  • Operate heavy equipment including front-end loader, back-hoe loader, motor grader, track-hoe excavator and bulldozer.
  • Perform routine maintenance and inspections of equipment.
  • Transports equipment and assists Heavy Equipment Mechanic as needed.

Operates all types of heavy equipment, including but not limited to, front-end loader, back-hoe loader, motor grader, track-hoe excavator, and bulldozer (crawler tractor), with a high degree of skill and proficiency. Engages and disengages attachments to equipment using construction tools. Moves construction materials from path of equipment. Daily inspects equipment and performs routine maintenance such as, lubricating, fueling and cleaning equipment. Loads and unloads heavy equipment and assists Heavy Equipment Mechanic as needed. Transports equipment.

Other Functions
  • Operates various other heavy equipment when deemed necessary such as crane, track front end loader, and skid steer.
  • Performs additional functions (essential or otherwise) which may be assigned.
Typical Physical Demands

Requires ability to operate assigned equipment which will involve repetitive motion, reaching, pulling, pushing, feeling and climbing. Requires ability to traverse grounds when moving equipment to surrounding job sites including wooded areas, bottom land, and ditch banks. May require crawling under equipment to remove trapped debris. Must be able to communicate and interpret instructions and warnings. Must be able to detect equipment malfunction or obstructions. Requires lifting (approx. 50 lbs.) to assist in maintenance of equipment or to change attachments.

Typical Working Conditions

Majority of work is performed outdoors exposed to dust, fumes and changing weather conditions. Exposed to noise and traffic. May be exposed to gas and/or electrical lines that have been cut.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent and three (3) years of experience in operating all types of heavy equipment required; or any combination of experience and training which enables one to perform the essential job functions. Must possess and maintain a valid Class "B" Tennessee (or equivalent out-of-state) Commercial Driver License and must comply with Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) Alcohol and Drug testing rules as a condition of continued employment. May be required to complete a battery of tests as deemed appropriate by Human Resources to evaluate competencies in operating the following heavy equipment: front-end loader, back-hoe loader, motor grader, track-hoe excavator, and crawler tractor.
