Job description

Overview

The role involves operating and maintaining heavy equipment, including bobcats, cherry pickers, tractors, front end loaders, man lifts, backhoes, forklifts, and in some areas dock and floating cranes, in a maritime environment along the Mississippi River system.

Key Responsibilities

• Participate in the company Safety Program and attend daily pre-shift meetings.
• Perform all duties in compliance with OSHA, company safety, and environmental regulations, including wearing appropriate PPE.
• Receive work orders from supervisory personnel and communicate flagging instructions to staff.
• Inspect heavy equipment and verify inspections before use, checking for defects and completing necessary checklists.
• Inspect and maintain rigging.
• Start up equipment and perform duties as per assigned work orders.
• Track assigned work and report completion of duties to supervisory personnel.
• Coordinate equipment locations with appropriate personnel/flagmen.
• Assist maintenance personnel with preventive maintenance and equipment repairs when required.
• Perform rigging inspections.
• Handle barge cover handling and barge drafting.
• Operate other equipment as required.
• Properly shut down equipment and secure on completion of assigned tasks.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Minimum of six months experience working in an industrial environment with a dependable work record.
• Experience operating additional heavy equipment such as front end loaders, man lifts, backhoes, and forklifts.
• Thorough knowledge of the operation and maintenance of assigned equipment.
• Knowledge of occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions for safe equipment operation.
• Knowledge of proper methods for lifting and moving loads for each equipment utilized.
• Effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
• Ability to identify operating deficiencies and defects, determine corrective measures, and make minor repairs/service.
• Ability to remain focused on exceptional customer service both internally and externally.
• Ability to safely maneuver equipment in tight spaces.
• Ability to work extended hours, evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
• Reliable transportation to reach work sites; sites typically located in Ascension, Jefferson, Plaquemines, Orleans, St. Charles, St. James, St. John the Baptist, or West Baton Rouge parishes.

Physical Demands & Requirements

• Lifting/pushing/pulling 45 lbs. occasionally.
• Climbing, crawling, stooping, kneeling, and balancing.
• Quickly adjusting to signals or changes in environment.
• Verbal communication in person and over two‑way radio.
• Working outside in extreme weather conditions, confined spaces, and around deep water as applicable.
• Working in high dust environments near grain and bulk products.
• Meeting PFT and fit testing requirements.
• Using all applicable PPE.
• Working extended hours, weekends, and holidays as needed.
