Job summary

Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator to join a team that maintains roads and related structures. You will operate County equipment and vehicles, helping build and preserve public infrastructure in a dynamic, safety-focused environment.

The role requires three years of heavy equipment experience, a high school diploma or GED, and a valid Arizona Class A CDL with a tanker endorsement.

Responsibilities

  • Operate a variety of medium to large construction and maintenance equipment in accordance with safety regulations.
  • Plan and prioritize work tasks using plans, drawings, and specs.
  • Perform pre- and post-checks, service, and maintenance on equipment; report issues.
  • Maintain daily logs and enter information in asset management systems.
  • Attend safety meetings and required trainings.
  • Haul materials and transport equipment to job sites.

Salary offers are based on the candidate's equivalent experience and internal equity with other employees within the same job classification. The position is eligible for overtime compensation for all hours worked over 40 in the designated workweek.

We Require
  • Three years of experience operating trucks and heavy equipment
  • High school diploma or GED
  • A valid Arizona Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a tanker endorsement
  • State and federal regulations require Maricopa County to conduct a pre-employment safety history investigation for all positions that require an applicant to possess a commercial driver's license (CDL). Maricopa County is also required to conduct a pre-employment safety history investigation for positions that directly impact commercial motor vehicle safety, but may not specifically require a valid CDL

  • Experience transporting equipment along with operating/driving the following: motor grader, backhoe, frontend loader, distributor trucks, and various types of small equipment.
Job Contributions
  • Operate a variety of medium to large-sized construction and maintenance equipment/vehicles in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures
  • Plan and prioritize work tasks; read and interpret plans, drawings, and specifications
  • Perform pre- and post-checks, clean, service, and minor maintenance repairs on equipment/vehicles. Identify and report mechanical problems requiring additional repair
  • Complete required daily logs and prepare reports; enter information in the asset management system (Cartegraph). Attend safety meetings, other required meetings, and mandatory training
  • Perform heavy manual labor assignments as needed and assist with work for crews as required
  • Haul materials and transport vehicles and equipment to job sites using various trucks and transporters
  • Other job duties as assigned
Working Conditions
  • Exerting 50 - 100 pounds occasionally, 10 - 25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 - 20 pounds constantly
  • Incumbent may be subjected to extreme temperatures, wetness/humidity, respiratory hazards, and noise and vibration
  • Incumbent may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, intense noises, and travel
