Job summary

Hubbard Construction Company in Florida seeks a Heavy Equipment Mechanic to maintain and repair critical site machinery, including cranes, paving machines, scrapers, and loaders. This hourly role requires versatility and the ability to transition between tasks as workflows demand.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze malfunctions and repair construction equipment (cranes, scrapers, paving machines, etc.).
  • Drive a one ton or larger vehicle with standard transmission.
  • Operate and inspect machines to diagnose defects.
  • Dismantle and reassemble equipment using hoists and hand tools.
  • Replace defective engines and subassemblies such as transmissions.
  • Weld broken parts and structural members.
  • Read and comprehend repair manuals.
  • May assist with cleaning parts and assembly/disassembly of equipment.

General Description

A Heavy Equipment Mechanic is an hourly-rated skilled craft position that performs on construction projects any combination of the duties described more fully, below. A Mechanic typically performs a wide variety of tasks, transferring from one task to another as the work flow dictates.

Key Duties.
  • Analyze malfunctions and repairs, rebuild and maintain construction equipment, such as cranes, scrapers, paving machines, motor graders, bulldozers, loaders, pump compressors and pneumatic tools
  • Able to drive a one ton or larger vehicle with standard transmission.
  • Operate and inspect machines or equipment to diagnose defects.
  • Dismantle and reassemble equipment using hoists and hand tools.
  • Replace defective engines and subassemblies such as transmissions.
  • Weld broken parts and structural members.
  • Must be able to read and comprehend repair manuals.
  • Other related job functions may include, but not limited to:
  • Examines parts for damage and/or excessive wear
  • Using micrometers and gauges.
  • Tests overhauled equipment to insure operating efficiently.
  • May direct workers engaged in cleaning parts and assisting with assembly and disassembly of equipment.
  • May perform incidental work items included within other crafts as well as related duties.
  • Other duties as assigned,

Education and Experience. This position typically is not an entry-level job, as it requires demonstrable previous experience as a Mechanic.
  • A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is preferred.
  • Must be able to understand work directions and communicate effectively with job site supervisors and fellow employees.
  • Three (3) to Five (5) years or more of industry related experience is required for this position, with an emphasis on paving, roads, highways, and bridges.
  • Valid Florida driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.
Physical Demands.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear.
  • The employee will also stand; walk; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • The employee may lift and/or move at least 25 pounds personally.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • The operator must be able to climb on and off heavy mobile equipment safely.
  • Frequently walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground in varying weather conditions.
Work Environment.
  • Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Work environment periodically exposes the employees to high levels of noise, grease, and dust that is typically associated with a construction project.
  • Employee regularly works near heavy equipment and moving machinery.
  • Work may involve a variety of substances commonly found on construction sites such as form oil, grease, curing compounds, gasoline, diesel fuel and ready mixed concrete.
