UC Santa Cruz's Physical Planning, Development & Operations department seeks a Heavy-Duty Equipment Technician to maintain and repair a wide range of university-owned vehicles and equipment, from buses and trucks to generators and welding projects.
You will read blueprints, perform diagnostics, fabricate components, and document work while meeting safety, union, and regulatory requirements; travel up to 50% across campus sites and shift 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM.

Physical Planning, Development & Operations (PPDO) manages and oversees all University activities and services related to physical and environmental planning, design and construction, engineering, physical plant maintenance and operations, capital and space planning, space management, and the associated business services necessary to support these functions. The University’s main campus is spread across more than 2,000 acres and includes over 500 buildings comprising more than 8 million square feet. The department oversees operating budgets of over $60 million, manages a project portfolio of approximately $990 million, and employs over 400 full-time staff to carry out the duties necessary for campus development and operation.
Under the direction of the Fleet Services Technical Staff Supervisor, the Heavy-Duty Equipment Technician maintains and repairs heavy-duty vehicles and equipment. The incumbent inspects, maintains, repairs, diagnoses, adjusts, and replaces mechanical and electrical components on University-owned vehicles and equipment, including passenger sedans, light-duty trucks, vans (both passenger and cargo), medium-duty and heavy-duty trucks, fire and police vehicles, passenger transport buses, tractors and landscape maintenance equipment, street sweepers, standby generators (1-kw to 150-kw), and other vehicles and equipment used in the day to day operations of the University.
Systems and sub-systems maintained and repaired include engine, transmission, ignition, fuel delivery, charging and starting, exhaust, electrical, drivetrain, braking (both hydraulic and air-actuated), air comfort, steering, suspension, and hydraulic systems. The Heavy-Duty Equipment Technician also performs fabrication and welding, operates and maintains shop tools and equipment, and documents work performed. Additional duties include TIG, MIG, arc, and fuel/gas welding, cutting, burning, and shearing of various metals, including steel, aluminum, stainless steel, and cast aluminum.
Budgeted Salary: $42.70 - $53.12/hour. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
