Job summary

City of Savannah is seeking a Heavy Construction Equipment Operator for the Refuse Disposal Division, located at 1327 Dean Forest Rd, Garden City, GA. This role operates and maintains heavy equipment, transports gear to sites, inspects machinery, and enforces safety protocols in a fast-paced environment.

Qualified candidates will have a high school diploma or GED, at least three years of heavy equipment experience, and a valid state CDL.

Qualifications

• Three years of heavy construction equipment operation and maintenance experience.
• Must possess and maintain a valid state CDL with clean driving record.

Responsibilities

• Operates and maintains heavy motorized construction equipment.
• Transports heavy equipment to job sites as needed.
• Inspects equipment before use and performs minor repairs.
• Inspects job sites for hazards and enforces safe work practices.
• Sets up traffic control devices around work sites.
• Supports daily reporting and vehicle/equipment inspections.
• Responds to emergencies during and after hours.

• Operates and maintains heavy motorized construction equipment.
• Transports heavy construction equipment to job sites.
• Inspects equipment before use to ensure necessary repairs are made.
• Inspects job sites for possible hazards.
• Ensures proper equipment maintenance; performs minor repairs as necessary.
• Operates roll-off container truck to support transfer station as needed.
• Assists in the maintenance, repair, and clean-up of rights-of-way, streets, sidewalks, and guardrails; enforces safe work practices.
• Assists supervisor and crew chief in the scheduling and documentation of work; completes daily work reports; ensures that operators complete daily vehicle and equipment inspection reports.
• Sets up traffic control devices around work sites.
• Operates radio in accordance with proper radio protocol.
• Repairs or replace underground sewer pipes, manhole ring and tops, repairs erosion problems.
• Responds to emergency situations during and after normal work hours.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

High school diploma or GED; with three years of heavy construction equipment operation and maintenance; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Motor Grader Operation critical for this position.

Must possess and maintain a valid state commercial driver's license with an acceptable driving history.
