Job summary

Quest Global is seeking an experienced Heat Treat and Weld Engineer to own daily heat treat and welding operations on the Windsor Locks shop floor. You will optimize thermal processes, lead pyrometry per AMS 2750, and collaborate with quality to achieve NADCAP readiness.

The role requires a strong background in metallurgy, welding documentation, and process control, with hands-on troubleshooting on the shop floor and effective cross-functional communication.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science or related field, or 3–5 years aerospace experience.
  • 1+ year in heat treatment, welding, or related manufacturing; 3–5 years for independent responsibilities.
  • Working knowledge of heat treat processes and AMS 2750 requirements.
  • Familiarity with NADCAP Heat Treat and Welding, including pyrometry requirements.
  • Knowledge of AMS 2750, ASTM, MMPDS, CMH-17, AS9100 and related customer specs.
  • Experience developing, reviewing, or standardizing WPS, PQR, welding parameters and docs.
  • Experience with SAP, Solumina, and Teamcenter.

Responsibilities

  • Own and support daily heat treat and weld engineering operations, ensuring processes meet specs.
  • Develop, troubleshoot, and optimize thermal processes including hardening, tempering, annealing, quenching, and cooling.
  • Lead pyrometry and heat treat process control activities per AMS 2750 and NADCAP.
  • Maintain and optimize heat treat equipment through tuning, maintenance, and calibration.
  • Evaluate material for grain structure, hardness, defects, and distortions; develop corrective actions.
  • Troubleshoot manufacturing issues and implement corrective actions to improve performance.
  • Develop, standardize, and improve welding processes and documentation (WPS, PQR, weld parameters).
  • Collaborate with manufacturing and quality to standardize processes for NADCAP accreditation.
  • Investigate defects, perform root cause analysis, implement corrective actions with Quality/Operations.
  • Provide guidance on material behavior, metallurgy, welding, heat treatment, and properties.

Job Requirements
What You will Do:
  • Own and support daily heat treat and weld engineering operations, ensuring processes consistently meet material, quality, and customer specifications.
  • Develop, troubleshoot, and optimize thermal processes, including hardening, tempering, annealing, quenching, and controlled cooling, establishing appropriate furnace temperatures, soak times, and cooling rates.
  • Lead pyrometry and heat treat process control activities in accordance with AMS 2750, NADCAP, and applicable internal standards.
  • Maintain and optimize gas, vacuum, induction, and other heat treat equipment through equipment tuning, troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and calibration practices.
  • Evaluate heat-treated material and components for grain structure, hardness, surface/core defects, distortion, cracking, soft spots, and other process-related conditions, and develop corrective solutions.
  • Support troubleshooting of manufacturing issues, including warping, cracking, distortion, and material property variation, and implement corrective actions to improve process performance.
  • Develop, standardize, and improve welding processes and documentation, including Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), Procedure Qualification Records (PQR), weld parameters, and related process controls.
  • Partner with manufacturing and quality teams to establish, maintain, and standardize welding and heat treat processes in support of NADCAP accreditation and ongoing compliance.
  • Investigate process and material defects, perform root cause analysis, and implement corrective and preventive actions in collaboration with Quality and Operations.
  • Provide technical guidance on material behavior, metallurgy, welding, heat treatment, and resulting material properties to manufacturing, quality, and other cross-functional teams.
  • Create, maintain, and approve materials and process specifications, engineering documents, work instructions, material notes, and related technical documentation for aerospace materials and manufacturing processes.
  • Manage documentation, traceability, and process records for heat treat and weld operations while ensuring compliance with applicable NADCAP, AS9100, ASTM, AMS, and customer requirements.
  • Drive digitization and process improvements for manufacturing data and workflows using systems such as Solumina, SAP, and Teamcenter.
  • Identify and implement improvements that increase process repeatability, reduce variation, improve quality, and increase manufacturing throughput.
  • Develop technical solutions to complex manufacturing and materials problems requiring engineering judgment, ingenuity, and creative problem-solving.
  • Work directly on the manufacturing shop floor to troubleshoot process bottlenecks, determine root causes, and implement practical engineering solutions.
  • Support customer and internal engineering activities, including technical reviews, audits, corrective actions, and communication of complex technical concepts to cross-functional teams.
How You Will Get Here
  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Metallurgy, Materials Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field, or 3-5 years of relevant aerospace/manufacturing experience.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in heat treatment, welding, materials engineering, or a related manufacturing environment; 3-5 years preferred for independent engineering responsibilities.
  • Working knowledge of heat treat processes, pyrometry, and process controls, including AMS 2750 requirements.
  • Familiarity with NADCAP Heat Treat and Welding, including pyrometry requirements and weld process qualification.
  • Knowledge of applicable industry and aerospace standards, including AMS 2750, ASTM, MMPDS, CMH-17, AS9100, and related customer specifications.
  • Experience developing, reviewing, or standardizing WPS, PQR, welding parameters, and welding process documentation is preferred.
  • Experience working with SAP, Solumina, and Teamcenter or similar manufacturing and engineering systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently lead complex engineering tasks, troubleshoot manufacturing processes, and interface with customers and cross-functional teams.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and technical writing skills, with the ability to communicate complex engineering concepts effectively.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced manufacturing environment and directly support shop-floor operations.
Pay Range:

$80,000 - $95,000

Work Requirements

This role is considered an on-site, first shift position located in Windsor Locks, CT.

  • You must be able to commute to and from the location with your own transportation arrangements to meet the required working first shift hours (7:30am - 4:00pm).
  • Shop floor environment, which may include but not limited to extensive walking, and ability to lift up to 40 lbs.

Travel requirements: Due to the nature of the work, 5% of travel is required
