Job summary

Qualifications

Responsibilities

Job description

SUMMARY:

• To provide an educational environment in which hearing-impaired students succeed academically, socially, and physically in accordance with system philosophy, goals, and objectives. To serve as a student advocate, role model, and professional resource for parents, the community, and the school system.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• To facilitate the provision of a free and appropriate public education to students with hearing impairments.
• To provide the type of services necessary for hard-of-hearing or deaf students. This will include, but is not limited to: remedial/tutorial instruction in academic, behavioral, or functional skills areas consultation with the general and/or special educators regarding methods and materials, teaching of sign language, recommendation of appropriate assistive technology, and general maintenance of assistive technology devices or equipment (e.g., to check the proper functioning of hearing aids, auditory trainers, etc.)
• To administer standardized, norm-referenced, or criterion-referenced tests, for IEP and eligibility purposes.
• To participate in the Referral, Eligibility, and IEP committees to reach legally sound conclusions.
• To be aware of and implement current eligibility criteria for hearing impaired students, under both the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
• To complete all required paperwork correctly within the state or system established timelines.
• Communicate with and coordinate services with other agencies
• To write and implement IEPs.
• To keep parents informed and work cooperatively with parents regarding the education of their child.
• To provide any other services, perform other tasks, and assume other responsibilities as may be assigned by the principal or special education director.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

• Must hold appropriate Alabama Special Education Certification in the area of Hearing Impaired and meet all requirements deemed by the ALSDE.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

• Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.

REASONING ABILITY:

• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
• The employee must occasionally lift and/or move heavy objects and infrequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perceptions, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

• The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions.

  • Outside the state of Alabama, we must have a letter (on school district letterhead) or public school district form showing beginning and ending dates stating your years of service and position held while employed
  • Credit is awarded for public school experience only, private, parochial, or similar experience will not be accepted
  • Experience must be full time at least 50%-100% of the academic year
  • Administrative credit will be awarded only for experience in the same position, i.e., principal for principal position as stated in the salary schedule
  • Transfer Sick Leave: If you have sick leave from another state school system or from another state of Alabama agency, you must have a Sick Leave Transfer form sent from your previous employer to our Human Resources department
• The Decatur City Board of Education awards a salary based on the highest degree earned, even if the degree is outside education. The degree must be verified on an official transcript & recognized by the Alabama State Department of Education.
