Job summary

The University of Utah’s Department of Public Safety is seeking a Healthcare Security Professional to safeguard patients, staff, and visitors across multiple campus healthcare facilities. This hands-on role offers 24/7 shifts (mornings, evenings, overnight) and potential 10- or 13-hour days with strong development opportunities.

Responsibilities include patrols, access control, incident reporting, de‑escalation, and collaboration with medical teams.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma, GED or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).
  • Ability to successfully pass a background check
  • Demonstrated communications skills and a commitment to providing excellent customer service
  • A valid Utah Driver’s License to be obtained within 6 months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Secures buildings to prevent theft and property damage within the University Hospital, community health centers, and other University facilities as needed.
  • Conducts foot and vehicle patrols throughout the University Hospital, community health centers, and other University facilities, including a Level 1 Trauma Center environment, as part of a proactive safety and security program.
  • Controls access to the University Hospital, community health centers, and other University facilities by verifying identification, monitoring vehicles and packages, and managing the limited access program for internal doors.
  • Maintains detailed logs to inform department heads of potential security concerns.
  • Provides special services to the University community, including escorting individuals and assisting patrons and visitors with directions.
  • Monitors the security of controlled substances and valuable equipment using surveillance systems to deter theft.
  • Assists hospital staff during medical emergencies by managing crowd control and providing advanced de‑escalation techniques.
  • Responds to threats and risks across the spectrum of workplace violence, addressing aggression that disrupts patient care or threatens the safety of staff and visitors.
  • Assists in gathering information related to theft/property loss, workplace violence, and other incidents that may disrupt healthcare operations, referring matters to law enforcement as appropriate.
  • Makes critical emergency decisions in response to public safety threats, prioritizing the health and safety of others even when personal safety is at risk.
  • Prepares comprehensive reports and records to document incidents and ensure accurate communication.
  • Obtains certifications in non‑violent crisis intervention and physical intervention skills through recognized training programs.
  • Achieves Basic‑level certification from the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety ( IAHSS ).
  • Assists medical staff with physical interventions involving disruptive or combative patients, ensuring the safety of all parties involved.
