Description

General Purpose: The Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) plays a critical administrative and clerical role in supporting the smooth and efficient operation of the psychiatric and detox units. The HUC acts as a liaison between nursing staff, medical providers, patients, and other departments, ensuring timely communication and accurate documentation in a high-acuity, fast-paced behavioral health environment.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities
  • Unit Coordination & Clerical Support:
  • Greet and assist patients, visitors, and staff professionally and respectfully.
  • Manage the flow of patient information and unit communication.
  • Answer phones, route calls, and take accurate messages.
  • Maintain orderly and updated patient charts, both paper and electronic (EHR).
  • Coordinate admissions, discharges, and transfers with nursing and admissions departments.
  • Medical Record Management:
  • Ensure timely and accurate documentation of provider documentation and treatment notes.
  • File and maintain confidential medical records per HIPAA regulations.
  • Assist in assembling admission packets and discharge instructions.
  • Communication & Liaison Duties:
  • Communicate effectively with providers, nurses, clinicians, and ancillary departments.
  • Assist in scheduling appointments, transportation, and follow-up care.
  • Inventory & Supplies:
  • Monitor and order unit supplies (clerical and medical) as needed.
  • Ensure exam rooms and nursing stations are stocked and organized.
  • Compliance & Safety:
  • Adhere to facility policies and procedures, especially those concerning patient confidentiality and safety.
  • Understand and participate in infection control and emergency preparedness procedures.
  • Report and document any incidents or unusual behavior per protocol.
Job Qualifications:
Required:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Strong communication, multitasking, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in high-stress or crisis situations.
Preferred:
  • Experience in a psychiatric, detox, or other behavioral health setting preferred.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology, EHR systems, and office equipment.
  • Basic knowledge of HIPAA, patient rights, and mental health protocols.
Work Schedule:
  • Five 8-hour shifts per week.
  • May involve rotating shifts, weekends, or holidays based on unit needs.

Summary of Compensation

The base compensation represents the entry point of the range. Actual salaries will vary and may be above or below the range based on factors including but not limited to location, experience, education and performance. The salary is just one component of Solvista Health's total compensation package for employees. ?

Working Conditions and Other Conditions of Employment
Working Environment:
  • Primarily a stationary clerical position, with occasional walking to deliver messages or retrieve records.
  • Exposure to patients experiencing acute psychiatric distress or substance withdrawal.

This job operates in a fast-paced, professional office environment and routinely requires the use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers. The position may require travel to conferences, meetings and branch locations on a regular or intermittent basis. Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. In the health center environment, there is potential for contact with blood-borne pathogens and communicable diseases, as well as potential for contact with dissatisfied or abusive individuals. There could be interaction with persons who are mentally ill, disabled, elderly and emotionally upset.

Physical Activities:

This is a largely sedentary role but can involve standing or sitting for extended periods of time, bending at the waist, and using hands and fingers to handle and file papers or operate assigned equipment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus. Employee may also have to lift 10 to 25 lbs. unassisted.

Conditions of Employment:
  • Annual TB federally required drug screening, and Influenza vaccination or compliance with policy and procedure.
  • Required possession of a valid state driver's license.
  • Successful candidate must submit to and pass, post-offer drug screen, background check, and FBI Fingerprint check.
