Job Description

Westfield Middle School is seeking qualified applicants to serve as the Health Teacher for grades 7 and 8.

Job Summary
  • Teach knowledge and skills in physical fitness, health education, rhythms and dance, and individual, dual, or team sports using the course of study adopted by the Westfield School Department and appropriate curriculum publications.
  • Instruct pupils in citizenship, basic communication skills, and other general elements of the course of study common to all teachers, as specified in state law, administrative regulations, and procedures of the school district.
  • Work cooperatively with other physical education teachers in planning a balanced physical education program.
  • Analyze, demonstrate, and explain basic skills, knowledge, and strategies of formal sports, games, rhythms, and fundamentals of body movement.
  • Provide individualized and small‐group instruction to adapt the curriculum to each pupil’s needs, to the extent feasible.
  • Teach physical education classes for handicapped pupils as necessary.
  • Provide appropriate safety instruction and conduct safety checks on equipment and field areas to ensure students’ safety.
  • Maintain control of storage and use of school‑owed property.
  • Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment in the physical education areas.
  • Evaluate pupils’ growth in physical skills, knowledge, and contribution to team sports.
  • Communicate with parents and school counselors about pupil progress.
  • Identify pupil needs and cooperate with other professional staff to assess and help pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  • Maintain professional competence through district in‑service education activities and self‑selected professional growth activities.
  • Supervise pupils in out‑of‑classroom activities during the assigned work day.
  • Participate in curriculum development programs as required.
  • Perform any other duties that may be assigned by the building principal or the Superintendent of Schools.

REPORTS TO: Building Principal

Salary and terms of employment will be commensurate with the Westfield Public Schools Unit A contract. Salary placement will be based on information contained in the application as submitted.

Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Westfield School Committee policy on evaluation.

Salary: $49,564 to $99,440 Per Year

Job Requirements
  • Work is generally conducted within the school building. Ability to travel throughout the building is necessary. The position involves sitting and the ability to move from one classroom to another. Work is light in nature with regular lifting of up to 10 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds with some pulling or pushing or reaching above. Frequent use of hands to operate keyboards, telephones, and other office equipment. Regular attendance is essential.
  • Certified as a teacher of Health/Family and Consumer Science (All) and Physical Education (PreK‑8) by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
  • Citizenship, residency or work visa required.
