Job description

The Position

Under the direction of the Director of Student Health Services, the College Nurse or Nurse Associate performs the duties of a front‑line medical office receptionist and nursing assistant.

Office Duties
  • Greet students, faculty, and the public at the reception desk and prepare charts (medical records) as necessary.
  • Answer telephones, schedule appointments, and provide forms, assistance, and information to all patrons.
  • Contact insurance companies as needed and maintain student insurance records.
  • Prepare and maintain medical records and reports, including claim forms for student accident insurance.
  • Operate office equipment (computer, printer, copier, fax machine) and type letters, memos, reports, and promotional flyers.
  • Maintain a clean, orderly work environment and inventory of medical forms and supplies.
  • Assemble and distribute incoming and outgoing mail.
  • Collect fees from students, faculty, and staff for fee services when required.
  • Train and supervise student workers and hourly support staff on a temporary basis.
Patient Care Duties
  • Perform phlebotomy (venipuncture) procedures on patients for ordered tests.
  • Collect laboratory specimens as directed by RN or MD and prepare them for the laboratory.
  • Take and record vital signs (weight, height, BP, pulse oximetry, peak flow, temperature, pulse, respirations) and report abnormal findings to RN, NP, or MD.
  • Perform urine analysis by chemical strip and document results; report abnormalities.
  • Assist RN, NP, or MD during examinations and perform standby duties as needed.
  • Organize and clean exam rooms.
Qualifications
  • Knowledge of office receptionist duties, preferably from medical office experience.
  • Basic understanding of medical terminology.
  • Computer proficiency for data entry and publishing; familiarity with printers, copiers, and fax machines.
  • Basic accounting skills.
  • Oral and written communication skills, including interview techniques.
  • CPR and first aid training.
  • Experience with venipuncture and other laboratory specimen collection.
  • Ability to use and maintain medical supplies and equipment.
  • Patient teaching and reinforcement of nursing and medical regimens.
Skills and Abilities
  • Adherence to universal precautions.
  • Proficiency in MS Word or similar office software for producing letters and memos.
  • Deciphering and interpreting medical records.
  • Cooperative teamwork and independent organization of tasks.
  • Ability to work calmly under stressful situations and communicate effectively in both oral and written formats.
  • Administrative support such as data entry, scheduling, and inventory management.
  • Basic first‑aid techniques, including bandaging, ice application, and bleeding control.
Training and Experience
  • Current certification in CPR, First Aid, and Phlebotomy.
  • Formal or on‑the‑job training in office receptionist duties, preferably in a medical office setting; ongoing training is acceptable.
  • At least one year of experience as a medical office receptionist or assistant.
Desired Qualifications
  • Current CPR certification for Health Care Professionals.
  • Current First Aid certification.
