Job summary

EnergySolutions is seeking a Health and Safety Specialist to analyze workplaces, identify hazards, and develop programs ensuring compliance with regulations. The role involves training employees and managers on health and safety policies and supporting project safety initiatives.

Qualified candidates will have an associate degree in a related field, 3+ years of experience, and may hold CIH/CSP certifications.

Qualifications

  • Associate's degree required in industrial hygiene, occupational safety, biology, chemistry, environmental science or a science-/health and safety-related field.
  • A bachelor's degree in one of the aforementioned areas preferred.
  • CIH or CSP certifications preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as a health and safety specialist.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a health and safety specialist.

Responsibilities

  • Understand and analyze workplace activities to identify, control and eliminate hazardous conditions.
  • Train employees and managers on health and safety policies, procedures and regulations.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state and federal health and safety regulations.
  • Develop health and safety programs and job hazard analyses.

Job Description/Tasks/Responsibilities
  • Is responsible for understanding and analyzing workplace activities and potential hazards to support initiatives to identify, control and eliminate hazardous conditions that affect workers, property, the environment and the general public. Implements training of employees and managers relative to health and safety policies, procedures and regulations. Ensures compliance with all applicable local, state and federal health and safety regulations and ensures that necessary records are prepared and maintained according to established guidelines. Promotes compliance with required experience modification rate (EMR), total recordable case (TRC) and days away restricted or transferred (DART) established goals.
  • Analyzes workplaces and designs programs to identify, control, eliminate and prevent disease or injury caused by chemical, physical and biological agents or ergonomic factors that involve the impact of equipment design on a worker’s comfort or fatigue. These tasks are necessary to maintain a healthy and productive workforce thereby enabling EnergySolutions to reach its performance goals and stay competitive in the marketplace.
  • Performs surveys and assessments to determine compliance with health and safety regulations and requirements.
  • Interprets local, state and federal regulations and determines the appropriate method of compliance.
  • Is a subject matter expert in one or more health and safety areas (e.g., air quality management, asbestos management, industrial safety, hazardous materials management, hazardous waste management, ergonomics and/or injury and illness prevention).
  • Develops methods for predicting hazards from historical data, workplace analyses and other sources. Identifies potential hazards associated with existing and planned systems, equipment, products, facilities and processes.
  • Reviews causes and effects of hazards and then evaluates the probability and severity of accidents or exposures to hazardous materials that may result.
  • Coordinates training sessions for employees/managers on health and safety regulations, requirements and practices.
  • Assists with the development and revision of training materials as necessary to ensure compliance with regulations, current procedures and recognized best practices.
  • Provides health and safety support to projects and the Health and Safety manager to implement health and safety requirements.
  • Prepares and reviews written programs, job hazard analyses, personal protective equipment assessments and other health and safety program elements.
  • Develops, reviews, conducts and approves job hazard analyses and activity hazards analyses.
  • Helps develop health and safety plans/procedures and reviews them to identify health and safety concerns.
  • Reviews business proposals for adequacy in addressing specified health and safety requirements.
  • Participates in plan-of-the-day briefings and safety inspections and oversees work teams to address health and safety concerns.
  • There is no supervision of other workers at this level
  • Responsible for the quality of his/her own work and satisfying customer (internal and external) specifications.
  • Must be able to work independently and resolve practical problems.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements/Skills
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • General knowledge of biology, chemistry and the physical/natural sciences
  • Working knowledge of local, state and federal health and safety regulations and site health and safety requirements
  • Ability to understand and apply health and safety regulations and requirements
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office products and their use (Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint)
Physical/Mental Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Ability to perform frequent/occasional walking, lifting, bending, sitting, squatting, standing, climbing, kneeling, and handling objects; frequent reaching above shoulder levels; frequent carrying and lifting loads from 25 to 50 pounds
  • Ability to occasionally sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
  • Basic speaking, reading and writing skills and ability to comprehend written and verbal instructions
  • Ability to work in extreme weather conditions and environments wherein there is exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, noxious odors, gases, chemicals and mechanical and electrical hazards
  • Ability to work independently and with others
  • Ability to work well under pressure
Minimum Education, Experience and Certification Requirements
Education
  • Associate's degree required in industrial hygiene, occupational safety, biology, chemistry, environmental science or a science-/health and safety-related field

Certifications
  • CIH or CSP certifications preferred
