Job summary

University of Cincinnati is seeking a Health & Safety Professional 1 to assist with unit duties and guide faculty, staff, and students on safety matters. This onsite role requires regulatory knowledge, routine inspections, and coordination of lab safety activities.

Key responsibilities include facilitating waste management, supporting policy development, and assisting in audits and lab procedures. Four years of relevant experience and a bachelor’s degree in IH/physical sciences are required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in industrial hygiene, physical science, chemistry or biology.
• Four years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.
• Must obtain "trustworthy and reliable status" within three months of employment.
• Experience in environmental health and safety, basic or clinical research, health physics or compliance; wet labs experience.

Responsibilities

• Maintain knowledge of regulations and advise personnel on policy violations; review projects for regulatory compliance.
• Perform analyses/evaluations and inspections; facilitate safety awareness programs; investigate concerns.
• Coordinate waste management operations (radioactive, chemical, biohazardous) and monitor inventories.
• Coordinate laboratory setup with Facilities teams and other personnel.
• Assist in policy creation, procedures and resource development; communicate safety bulletins to staff and students.

Job Overview

Assist with the duties of the unit and provide guidance to faculty, staff, and students on safety-related matters.

Essential Functions

• Maintain current knowledge of relevant regulations and rules and advise appropriate personnel of any governmental and/or university policy violations. Ensure that all relevant areas and functions have knowledge of relevant rules and regulations. Review projects to facilitate regulatory compliance.
• Perform necessary analysis/evaluations and make recommendations to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and best practices in relevant areas. Conduct basic and routine inspections. Facilitate safety awareness programs. Receive and investigate complaints and/or concerns.
• Facilitate waste management operation (radioactive, chemical, and/or biohazardous) when appropriate. Facilitate proper workflow across unit. Assist in the generation and monitoring of inventories (radioactive, chemical, and/ or biohazardous).
• Coordinate laboratory setup and related activities with college Facilities teams or other necessary personnel.
• Support the department in the creation of policies, procedures, and resources. Communicate with administrators, faculty, staff, and students regarding safety bulletins, policies, and inquiries.
• Assist in the resolution of audit findings and issues where appropriate. Assist with development and review of laboratory procedures.
• May provide direct and/or indirect supervision to exempt and non-exempt staff (i.e., hiring/firing, performance evaluations, disciplinary action, approve time off, etc.).

Required Education

• Bachelor’s degree must be in industrial hygiene, physical science, chemistry or biology.
• Four (4) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.

Required Trainings/Certifications

Must obtain "trustworthy and reliable status" as outlined by Ohio Department of Health within three (3) months of employment.

Required Experience

Work experience must be in environmental health and safety, basic or clinical research, health physics or compliance. Must have experience working in or with wet labs.

Salary/Hourly Pay Rate Information: $52,000 - $58,000
