Sylvania is seeking a Health Room Assistant to provide daily health-related care to students in the school health room. The role involves maintaining health records, monitoring immunizations, and supporting the Health Clinician – RN with care and documentation.

The position requires a High School Diploma (or equivalent), CPR/First Aid and AED certification, and ideally CNA/MA experience. Bilingual English/Spanish is preferred. Part-time role, on-site, with training upon hire.

Six and a half (6.5) hours per day, two (2) days per week, 180 days per school year

Job Description
PURPOSE STATEMENT

This position provides daily health related care to students under the direction of a licensed health care professional by effective communication to prevent, identify, and/or remediate health problems which may impair learning, social adjustment, or emotional well-being of students.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • 1. Maintain accurate written and computerized health records of all students and provide care for students in the health room.
  • 2. Maintain/track student immunization records to support reporting requirements for Washington Department of Health.
  • 3. Document all health care provided to students in a timely manner.
  • 4. Distribute/implement health protocols as directed by the Health Clinician – RN.
  • 5. Monitor health plans to meet the medical, health, and safety needs of students, which includes medication authorization forms and self-carry medication forms required by District Policy.
  • 6. Administer prescribed medicines/treatments to students according to Washington State Law and District Board Policy and document as directed by the Health Clinician – RN.
  • 7. Provide immediate first aid care in case of injury or sudden illness.
  • 8. Provide care for students with special physical needs as needed after receiving training and under the direction of the Health Clinician – RN, including but not limited to catheterization, gastrostomy tube feeding, monitoring diabetes, as well as support school and family in the remediation of head lice.
  • 9. Follow District Policy regarding prevention and control of communicable diseases, first aid in acute illness or injury, disaster preparedness, and safety and sanitation in the assigned building.
  • 10. Notify Health Clinician – RN in case of an outbreak of disease, and check immune suppressed students’ schedule/class for possible exposure.
  • 11. Check for medical conditions and medication prior to field trips. Provide teachers with necessary information. Verify trained staff is assigned to field trips or attend field trips as necessary.
  • 12. Manage health room medical supplies.
  • 13. Practice Universal Precautions to prevent contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials (OPIM).
  • 14. Attend in-services, workshops, and meetings as directed.
  • 15. Assist in vision and hearing screening as needed and in accordance with the Washington State Codes.
  • 16. Cultivate and model appropriate and cooperative behavior, including protecting confidential information, consistent with district ethical guidelines.
OTHER FUNCTIONS
  • 1. May serve on various district committees and/or departmental work teams.
  • 2. Perform related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
  • Reports jointly to the assigned Health Clinician – RN, Building Principal and the Director of Health Services.
MENTAL DEMANDS
  • Required to deal with a wide range of student, staff and public behaviors and needs in a positive and service-oriented manner.
  • May occasionally deal with distraught or difficult students or parents.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • May be required to physically transfer students.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
  • Current CPR/First Aid and AED certification.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Health care experience and/or CNA/MA strongly recommended
  • Experience working with children preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
  • Knowledge/awareness of own cultural identity and how this influences behavior, and desire to learn about the cultural identity of others.
  • Ability to establish and nurture an environment that promotes cultural competence and equitable treatment of staff, students, and patrons of the district.
  • Excellent human relations, communication, and organizational skills; ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Computerized record keeping skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize student needs.
  • Ability to maintain state/federal special education compliance requirements including timelines involving special needs or medically fragile students.
  • Ability to understand and maintain comprehensive student health care plans.
  • Knowledge of community resources and family service agencies.
  • Required to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to communicate effectively using both English and Spanish preferred.
Licenses/Special Requirements
  • Requires fingerprinting and background check to determine that there have been no convictions involving physical molestation, abuse, injury or neglect of a minor.
  • Must complete Training upon hire, as assigned by the RN.
