Job summary

The Georgia Department of Public Health is offering a Health Policy Legal Extern internship in a hybrid arrangement during a 10-week term. The extern will assist the Assistant Commissioner for Policy and the Director of Government Affairs, engaging in legislative tracking, bill analysis, and constituent services.

Ideal candidates are Law students or Public Health students enrolled in a Georgia college, with interest in policy, public health, and government affairs, and a willingness to work with

• Minimum qualifications require enrollment in Georgia high school, technical college, or university during internship.
• Preferred: Law student or Master of Public Health student.

Responsibilities

• Identify legislation that may directly impact the Department of Public Health.
• Conduct bill analysis and summary for internal staff.
• Track bills throughout the legislative session, including amendments and substitutes.
• Assist in constituent services as needed.
• Attend committee meetings, floor sessions, and budget hearings; provide summaries to the Policy team.
• Develop positive relationships with external partners during the legislative session.

Health Policy Legal Extern Position – Hybrid

We are looking for a dynamic, energetic intern who is eager to learn about our agency by assisting the work units with projects as assigned. To be successful as an Intern, you should be willing to help with any tasks assigned by a supervisor. You will be involved in upcoming projects as well as assisting with current campaigns

Key Objectives

The extern will assist the Assistant Commissioner for Policy and the Director of Government Affairs at Georgia Department of Public Health during the legislative session. The student will use legal and policy strategies to support various projects in the Office.

The extern will have a multitude of different tasks to perform each day that may include legislative tracking, bill analysis/summary, constituent services, attendance at committee meetings, and observation of Senate & House chambers during voting. During their time at the State Capitol, externs will gain knowledge of how state government works, how the legislative process works, along with making lifelong career contacts.

Duties

• Assist in identifying legislation that may directly impact the Department of Public Health.

• Conduct bill analysis and summary for distribution to internal DPH staff.

• Conduct bill tracking throughout the legislative session, including tracking bill amendments and substitutes.

• Assist in constituent services as needed.

• Attend committee meetings, floor sessions, and budget hearings and provide meeting summaries to the Policy team, as needed.

• Develop positive working relationships with external partners throughout the legislative session.
