Job summary

EmDX Research and Consulting Associates seeks a board-certified or board-eligible health physicist to serve as Radiation Safety Officer for the Orlando VA Healthcare System on a federal contract basis. The RSO will oversee the radiation safety program across Nuclear Medicine, diagnostic imaging, CT simulation, linear accelerator, and brachytherapy operations.

On-site presence is required Mondays and Thursdays; after-hours emergency availability (~25 hrs/year) is also required.

Qualifications

  • Board-certified or board-eligible health physicist
  • MRSO certification
  • Eligible to be named as RSO on an NRC license and on the TRPM registration certificate
  • Experience with NRC regulatory compliance (10 CFR 20, 10 CFR 35), OSHA (29 CFR 1910.1096), and FDA (21 CFR 1020.30, 21 CFR 900)
  • Ability to analyze complex data, write technical reports, and communicate findings to stakeholders
  • Capacity to work effectively in a hybrid environment and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams

Responsibilities

  • Oversee radiation safety program for Nuclear Medicine, diagnostic X-ray, fluoroscopy, mammography, CT simulation, and linear accelerators
  • Conduct annual inspections and calibrations of x-ray equipment and radionuclide areas
  • Perform surveys, wipe tests, and dosimetry distribution/collection
  • Investigate overexposures, ALARA exceptions, spills, and mis-administrations and report to NHPP/RSC
  • Prepare NRC/state license amendments and regulatory correspondence
  • Submit quarterly RSC reports and provide annual leadership briefings
  • Assist the Radiation Safety Committee and Radiation Drug Research Committee
  • Provide shielding design reports for linear accelerators prior to clinical use
  • Coordinate the Medical Imaging Quality Control Program and after-hours emergency response

Role Summary

EmDX Research and Consulting Associates is seeking a board-certified or board-eligible health physicist to serve as Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) for the Orlando VA Healthcare System on a federal contract basis. The RSO will oversee the facility's radiation safety program covering Nuclear Medicine, diagnostic imaging, CT simulation, linear accelerator, and brachytherapy operations. On-site presence is required Mondays and Thursdays; after-hours emergency availability (~25 hrs/year) is also required. MRSO certification is mandatory. This is a W-2 position with EmDX Research and is contingent upon contract award.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee radiation safety program for Nuclear Medicine, diagnostic x-ray, fluoroscopy, mammography, CT simulation, and linear accelerator operations.
  • Conduct at least annual inspections and calibrations of all x-ray equipment and radionuclide use/storage areas.
  • Perform and document surveys, wipe tests, and personnel dosimetry distribution/collection.
  • Investigate and report overexposures, ALARA exceptions, spills, medical events, and mis-administrations to NHPP and Radiation Safety Committee.
  • Prepare NRC/state license amendments, applications, and regulatory correspondence.
  • Submit quarterly reports to the Radiation Safety Committee; provide annual leadership briefings.
  • Assist the Radiation Safety Committee and Radioactive Drug Research Committee.
  • Provide shielding design reports for linear accelerators prior to clinical use.
  • Coordinate the Medical Imaging Quality Control Program.
  • Provide after-hours emergency response as needed.
  • Submit RSC meeting minutes within 5 business days of each quarterly meeting.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Strong foundation in Health Physics and Radiation, including principles of radiation protection and exposure control.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Radiation Safety, including development and implementation of safety procedures and monitoring programs.
  • Board-certified or board-eligible health physicist (American Board of Health Physics / Health Physics Society)
  • Magnetic Resonance Safety Officer (MRSO) certification.
  • Eligible to be named as RSO on an NRC license and on the Therapeutic Radiation Producing Machine Registration Certificate (Linear Accelerator).
  • Experience with NRC regulatory compliance (10 CFR 20, 10 CFR 35), OSHA (29 CFR 1910.1096), FDA (21 CFR 1020.30, 21 CFR 900).
  • Experience supporting or chairing Radiation Safety Committee meetings.
  • Experience with ACR, AAPM, and The Joint Commission (TJC) standards.
  • Ability to analyze complex data, write clear technical reports, and communicate findings to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Capacity to work effectively in a hybrid environment, manage time independently, and collaborate within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Professional certifications (such as CHP or in progress) and prior experience in medical, industrial, or research radiation settings are beneficial.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior VA or DoD RSO experience.
  • Familiarity with VHA Directive 1105.01 and NRC broad-scope license management.
  • Experience with linear accelerator and brachytherapy oversight.
