Job description

Standard Nuclear is fueling America's nuclear renaissance at industrial scale. Our mission is to deliver the essential building blocks of nuclear power—enabling cost-effective, safe, and secure energy for the world.

The Health Physicist supports Standard Nuclear’s radiological protection program by evaluating radiation hazards, developing protective measures, and ensuring safe working conditions across nuclear fuel manufacturing, laboratory, and material processing operations. This role provides technical expertise in radiation protection, contamination control, exposure assessment, and regulatory compliance to support safe and efficient operations.

This is a hands‑on technical role requiring strong knowledge of health physics principles, sound judgment, and the ability to translate radiological requirements into practical operational controls. The Health Physicist works closely with radiological control technicians, manufacturing, engineering, EH&S, quality, and licensing teams to identify risks, implement effective controls, and maintain compliance as Standard Nuclear expands its manufacturing capabilities.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Radiological Protection & Compliance
  • Support implementation and continuous improvement of the site's radiological protection program
  • Evaluate radiological hazards associated with nuclear fuel fabrication, uranium processing, material handling, and laboratory activities
  • Develop and maintain radiation protection procedures, technical assessments, and operational controls
  • Ensure radiological practices align with applicable regulations, license conditions, and company requirements
  • Apply As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) principles to minimize occupational radiation exposure
Radiation Monitoring & Dosimetry
  • Evaluate personnel radiation exposure through internal and external dosimetry programs
  • Assess radiation survey data, contamination levels, airborne radioactivity, and exposure trends
  • Perform health physics calculations involving dose assessment, shielding, contamination, and airborne radioactivity
  • Support selection, evaluation, calibration, and appropriate use of radiation detection and monitoring equipment
  • Analyze monitoring results to identify potential hazards and recommend corrective or preventive measures
Radiological Assessments & Operational Controls
  • Conduct radiological hazard assessments for manufacturing processes, equipment, facilities, and new operations
  • Establish appropriate monitoring requirements, contamination controls, protective equipment, and radiological work practices
  • Support development and review of radiological work permits, work instructions, and hazard assessments
  • Provide technical guidance to operations, engineering, and maintenance personnel on radiological safety requirements
  • Evaluate radiological impacts associated with process changes, equipment modifications, and manufacturing scale‑up
Incident Response & Corrective Actions
  • Support investigations involving radiological incidents, contamination events, unexpected exposures, or abnormal monitoring results
  • Perform technical evaluations to determine contributing factors, potential exposure consequences, and appropriate corrective actions
  • Develop recommendations to prevent recurrence and improve radiological protection practices
  • Support emergency preparedness activities, radiological response planning, and recovery efforts
  • Identify opportunities to improve radiological controls, monitoring practices, and overall program effectiveness
Documentation, Training & Cross‑Functional Support
  • Prepare and maintain radiological assessments, technical reports, procedures, monitoring records, and compliance documentation
  • Support radiological training and provide technical guidance to radiological control technicians and facility personnel
  • Participate in audits, inspections, regulatory reviews, and corrective action activities
  • Collaborate with EH&S, manufacturing, engineering, quality, and licensing teams to integrate radiological safety into operational planning
  • Support development of scalable radiological protection practices as manufacturing operations and facility capabilities expand
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Radiation Protection, Physics, or a related technical discipline
  • 3–7 years of experience in health physics, radiation protection, radiological safety, or related nuclear operations
  • Experience supporting radiological protection programs in nuclear facilities, fuel fabrication, uranium processing, national laboratories, or other regulated environments
  • Strong understanding of radiation detection, radiation measurement, contamination control, dosimetry, and exposure assessment
  • Experience performing radiological calculations involving internal and external dose, shielding, airborne radioactivity, and radiation hazards
  • Familiarity with applicable NRC and DOE radiation protection requirements, including 10 CFR Part 20 and 10 CFR Part 835, as relevant to facility operations
  • Experience conducting radiological hazard assessments and developing operational controls for radioactive material handling and processing
  • Knowledge of ALARA principles, radiological work permits, radiation monitoring instruments, and personnel protective measures
  • Experience developing technical procedures, radiological reports, compliance documentation, and corrective action plans
  • Ability to work effectively with radiological control technicians, engineers, operators, and safety personnel in operational environments
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and ability to communicate technical findings and recommendations clearly
  • Certified Health Physicist (CHP) designation or progress toward certification is preferred
