Responsibilities

• Conduct audits and inspections of radiation safety programs to ensure compliance with NRC, state, and institutional regulations.
• Develop, implement, and review Radiation Protection Programs for medical, academic, and industrial clients.
• Monitor and interpret occupational radiation dosimetry data; provide corrective action plans for exposures exceeding ALARA thresholds.
• Assist with incident response involving potential radiological exposure, contamination, or loss of radioactive material.
• Conduct shielding evaluations and design reviews for radiological facilities and projects.
• Perform area surveys, contamination checks, and exposure assessments for controlled/unrestricted areas.
• Consult with clients and regulatory bodies on licensing and registration of radioactive materials and devices.
• Provide technical guidance during regulator inspections and audits; support client responses.
• Deliver training on radiation safety, ALARA, and regulatory compliance to workers and staff.
• Serve on Radiation Safety Committees and provide decision-making guidance.

The Role

The Health Physicist will support medical facilities, research institutions, and industrial clients by overseeing and implementing radiation protection programs to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations, accreditation standards, and best practices in radiation safety in the San Francisco metro market. This role includes evaluating and managing occupational and public radiation exposure, conducting shielding evaluations, developing safety protocols, and advising on facility design. The Health Physicist will serve as a subject matter expert in radiation protection and will work closely with Radiation Safety Officers (RSOs), regulatory agencies, and operational staff. This role is for primary coverage in the San Francisco area and is an exempt position.

In addition, this individual will have the opportunity to interface with One Physics’ administration and management team as they build upon their California presence. This role will have meaningful managerial visibility and, thus, One Physics is looking for a strong communicator, leadership skills and, ideally, some managerial background.

What You’ll Do

• Conduct audits and inspections of radiation safety programs to ensure compliance with NRC, state, and institutional regulations.

• Monitor, analyze, and interpret occupational radiation dosimetry data; provide consultation and corrective action plans for exposures exceeding ALARA thresholds.
• Assist with incident response involving potential or actual radiological exposure, contamination, or loss of radioactive material.
• Conduct shielding evaluations and design reviews for radiological facilities, including new construction and renovation projects.
• Perform area surveys, contamination checks, and exposure assessments for controlled and unrestricted areas.
• Consult with clients and regulatory bodies on licensing and registration of radioactive materials and radiation-producing devices.
• Provide technical expertise during inspections by federal or state regulators and assist clients in preparing for and responding to audits.
• Deliver training and educational sessions on radiation safety, ALARA principles, emergency response, and regulatory compliance to radiation workers and ancillary staff.
• Serve on or support Radiation Safety Committees (RSCs) and provide technical guidance in decision-making processes.
• Maintain records, prepare documentation, and generate reports required by regulatory authorities and accrediting bodies.
• Support clients with radioactive waste handling, storage, and disposal, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations.
• Perform additional duties, as needed.

Physical Requirements

A typical day may require the health physicist to remain in a stationary position for an extended period of time wearing a lead apron, lift various pieces of test equipment, move mobile diagnostic medical equipment between rooms at a facility and drive between client facilities. Drive times may exceed 60 minutes to, from and in between client facilities. The physicist is expected to communicate with colleagues and clients on a frequent basis. The health physicist will operate a computer and other electronic equipment daily. Requires ability to use and move equipment. Occasional evening or weekend work.
