Health Department: Vector Control Specialist - INTERNAL ONLY

Description Incumbent serves as Vector Control Specialist for the Vigo County Health Department, responsible forapplying insecticide to designated areas to protect the County from bacterial and viral diseases transmitted by mosquitoes, ticks and fleas; maintaining and repairing all Health Department vehicles and equipment by using mechanical skills and knowledge; performs related work as apparent or assigned.
Examples of Duties
- Calibrates spray equipment, mixes chemicals and operates manual and power spray equipment to apply insecticides on private property and county right-of-way.
- Operates various equipment, vehicles, and power and/or hand tools in performance of duties, such as hammers, screw drivers, wrenches, drills, ratchets, files, power saws, air nozzle, air compressor, driver, grinder, cutting torch, welding equipment, pressure washer, sledge hammer, pry bars, post hole diggers, barrel pumps, barrel dollies, chain hoist, mosquito control ULV machines, ATV, backpack fogger, lawn mowers, weed eaters, shovels, rakes, and other hand or power tools as required for work assignments.
- Investigates complaints concerning garbage, refuse, insect and rodent infestation, advising responsible parties on principles of vector control and pest management; consults code compliance to assist in identifying legal owners of property with weed problems, mosquito and rodent infestations; conducts vector control programs for other problem insects, rodents and vertebrates.
- Surveys assigned areas for mosquito and insect breeding locations, identifying species and applying appropriate insecticide through biological control and source reduction; maintains records of field inspections, insecticide usage, field surveys, and performs necessary follow up to ensure progression and completion of actions.
- Conducts West Nile Virus surveillance, including collecting and identifying adult mosquitoes through collection of light traps and spraying for adult mosquitoes in West Nile prone areas.
- Conducts routine maintenance/repair on Department vehicles and equipment including paint and body work.
- Participates in the Tire Amnesty program by removing discarded tires from alleys, roadways and residential areas. Educates property owners/the public about proper tire storage to eliminate potential breeding sites for mosquitoes.
- Performs building and grounds maintenance and repairs, unloads and stocks chemicals/supplies, and assists in opening/closing facility.
- Inspects tire retailers/residential property to ensure compliance with the tire storage ordinance; maintains records, follow ups, and issues fines as needed if corrective action has not been taken to become compliant with tire storage ordinance.
- Conducts bat surveillance activities and educates home owners on bat proofing homes; captures and prepares specimens to be sent to the Indiana State Department of Health for rabies testing.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED and moderate experience.

Incumbent reports directly to Vector Control Supervisor.

This classification requires physical agility, including climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, pushing, pulling, repetitive motions, and manual dexterity. Sensory requirements include the ability to perform close and distance vision tasks, adjust focus, perceive depth and color, see at night and use peripheral vision. Employees must also be able to accurately, loudly, and quickly convey detailed or important instructions to others, as well as hear detailed information through oral communication and make fine distinctions in sound.
