Job summary

Irwin & Colton Limited is seeking a Health and Safety Manager at a major COMAH site in Essex. The role reports to the Group SHE Manager and involves leading a small H&S team, embedding a strong safety culture across operations and driving improvements to prevent injuries.

The successful candidate will bring NEBOSH Diploma (or equivalent) and proven experience in high-hazard environments, with a pragmatic approach to safety and strong stakeholder engagement.

Would you like to take the lead on health and safety at a major chemical manufacturing and distribution site, with a genuine opportunity to influence safety culture?

We are supporting a major COMAH site in the appointment of a Health and Safety Manager. This is a highly visible role, with a significant presence across the site and responsibility for leading a team of two H&S Advisors.

Reporting to the Group SHE Manager and working closely with the Site Manager and operational teams, you will play a key role in strengthening the site's safety culture and ensuring H&S is embedded into operations. You'll need to be someone who is comfortable taking a pragmatic approach and finding practical solutions.

There will also be the opportunity to support group wide audits and initiatives, with occasional travel depending on your experience and skill set.

Responsibilities of the Health and Safety Manager will include:

• Working closely with the Site Manager and wider leadership team to embed a strong safety culture
• Driving continuous improvement, identifying opportunities to reduce workplace injuries and exposures while improving engagement and ownership across the site
• Maintaining and audit key H&S management systems, including Permit to Work, contractor management, inductions, emergency response and incident investigations, ensuring corrective actions are implemented
• Supporting COMAH compliance, regulatory requirements and wider Group SHE activities, including audits and engagement with external stakeholders such as the HSE, Fire & Rescue and local authorities

The ideal Health and Safety Manager will have:

• Strong H&S leadership experience, ideally within a chemical, process or other high-hazard environment
• Experience working within a COMAH regulated environment or comparable high risk setting, with a strong understanding of regulatory compliance
• NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent, with practical experience across H&S management systems, auditing, incident investigation and risk management
• A pragmatic and influential approach, with the ability to build relationships, develop teams and positively influence safety culture across a busy operational site
