Qualifications
  1. Has the ability to organize and supervise a total sports program.
  2. Has previous successful coaching experience in assigned sport (major sports).
  3. Has substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and continually examines new theories and procedures pertinent to the field.
  4. Serves as an appropriate role model for student athletes through instructions and actions.
Reporting & Supervisory Relationships

Reports to the athletic director, who provides overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with the high school principals.

Supervises assistant coaches and middle school coaches in conjunction with the athletic director and respective principals.

Job Goal

To instruct athletes in fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary for individual and team success, while fostering socially acceptable character development, self‑discipline, confidence, and pride of accomplishment.

Continues to upgrade knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations, consultations, etc.

General Expectations
  1. The success of athletic programs influences community image; public exposure imposes responsibility and pressure but must not override objectives of good sportsmanship and mental health.
  2. Position includes unusual aspects such as extended time, risk of injury, and due process predicaments.
  3. Provides sufficient guidance and exercises common sense and good judgment when specific situations arise.
Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Has thorough knowledge of all athletic policies approved by the Glen Ridge Board of Education and is responsible for implementation by the entire staff.
  2. Knowledgeable of existing system, state, and league regulations; implements and interprets them for staff.
  3. Understands the proper administrative line of command and refers all requests or grievances through proper channels; attends required public/staff/departmental meetings.
  4. Established fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques for staff; designs conferences, clinics, and staff meetings to ensure program awareness.
  5. Trains and informs staff, encouraging professional growth via clinic attendance.
  6. Delegates specific duties, supervises implementation, and analyzes staff effectiveness at season’s end.
  7. Maintains discipline, addresses grievances, and fosters morale and cooperation.
  8. Performs other duties assigned by athletic director/principal.
  9. Assists with scheduling, transportation, and requirements for tournament and special events.
  10. Prepares to hold scheduled sport events or practices, adhering to facility times; coordinates with maintenance and school staff.
  11. Provides documentation for state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility.
  12. Ensures proper safeguards for equipment maintenance and protection.
  13. Recommends policy, method, or procedural changes to the athletic director.
  14. Serves as a mentor, promoting trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
  15. Monitors student athlete grades and conduct.
  16. Provides guidance, assistance, and safeguards during practices, games, and travel.
  17. Communicates training rules and sport regulations to each athlete.
  18. Initiates programs and policies concerning injuries, medical attention, and emergencies.
  19. Completes paperwork for disabling injuries on proper forms within 24 hours.
  20. Directs student managers, assistants, and statisticians.
  21. Determines discipline procedures, including due process, and contracts parents when a student is dropped or ineligible.
  22. Assists athletes in college or advanced educational selection.
  23. Participates in budgeting with athletic director, establishing equipment requirements and staying within budget.
  24. Accountable for all equipment, collecting cost of lost or not returned items.
  25. Manages issuance, storage, and reconditioning; submits annual inventory records.
  26. Marks and identifies equipment before issuing or storing.
  27. Monitors equipment rooms and coaches’ offices, authorizing access.
  28. Ensures athletes remain in authorized areas at appropriate times.
  29. Examines locker rooms before and after to maintain cleanliness and facility condition.
  30. Secures doors, lights, windows, and locks before leaving when custodians absent.
  31. Instills respect for equipment and school property.
  32. Organizes parents, coaches, players, and guests for preseason meetings.
  33. Promotes the sport within school and externally (media, local programs).
  34. Manages quality, effectiveness, and validity of media releases.
  35. Maintains public relations with media, booster club, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans.
  36. Presents information to news media on schedules, tournaments, and results.
