The Head Tennis Professional is responsible for helping the Director of Tennis oversee the Tennis program, facilities and staff.
Other duties may be assigned.
Compensation
This position is compensated with a base hourly rate plus commission earned on tennis and pickleball lessons. Total compensation will vary based on lesson volume and participation.
The successful individual:
- Must maintain membership in recognized United States Professional Tennis Registry (USPTR) or Racket Sports Professional Asscociation (RSPA).
- Must have a solid tennis background. Either played college tennis or has work experience teaching at a club. Playing level should be at least a 4.5 level.
- Must adhere to the USPTR’s or RSPA’s Code of Ethics.
- Must possess the skills to teach both individual and group lessons.
- Must be able to manage a round robin as well as other club events.
Professional Qualifications / Skills
- Ability to teach all levels of tennis players; i.e. beginners, intermediate, advanced
- Certified to provide professional tennis and pickleball instruction and equipment fitting, and stringing
- Strong verbal communications skills
- Self-motivated and self-promoted
- Conduct self in a professional manner commensurate with the USPTR or RSPA Code of Ethics
Job Related Competencies
- Assist in supervising all tennis and pickleball play, as directed by the club’s management / tennis and pickleball committee.
- Assist in the charging of court fees and other privilege fees.
- Provide competent tennis instruction for all groups and levels of players
- Assist in the operations of any player handicapping system or track player rankings through the Dynamic National Tennis Rating Programs (DNTRP) at such times and to the extent directed by the tennis committee.
- Help enforce all the club’s / facility’s rules and regulations governing the use of the facility, its equipment and other property.
- Assist in operating and maintaining a reputable pro shop staffed with competent personnel and featuring quality merchandise, professional racket-stringing, and services.
- Devote a reasonable number of hours to playing tennis with members regardless of their tennis excellence; such play is not to be considered a playing lesson.
- Enthusiastically encourage club participation by helping plan tennis and pickleball events to promote the sport and fellowship in the club / facility. Prepare tennis clinics, films, fun playing events or tennis education programs, etc. for such activities.
- Represent the club / facility in professional tennis activities, including meetings of the national and / or local division of USTA and in tournaments such as pro-ams with members, as well as state or national tennis events as time will permit, with approval of the Director of Tennis.
Organizational Responsibilities
- TOURNAMENTS
- Assist the Director of Tennis in meeting with the tennis committee for the purpose of preparing and planning the details of tennis events and activities.
- Help promote the club and the tennis programs and events.
- Ensure all facilities are ready for events.
- Secure draw sheets, score cards, and other such items necessary for respective tournaments.
- Prepare and distribute event information sheets and entry forms for participants.
- Help coordinate with the club / facility on use of other departmental amenities by participants (food, pool, etc).
- Be available for rules decisions and other necessary coordination through the events.
- PROGRAMS
- Assist with programs that are in place at the club / facility to serve the entire membership (juniors, adults, seniors, etc.).
- Help organize periodic special events at the club in an effort to attract and retain members’ tennis and pickleball interest.
- Provide all levels of play (beginner through advanced) instruction to enhance broad-based member participation.
- Provide educational opportunities for all members so they can understand and enjoy tennis and pickleball.
- Help in the preparation of an annual calendar of tennis and pickleball activities for the club facility. Ensure to coordinate and include other departments in an effort to create inter-club connectivity between events and other activities.
- MAINTENANCE
- Be able to do the necessary maintenance and upkeep of the courts when assigned.
- Assist in making certain that all necessary equipment for the maintenance and upkeep of the courts and the facility are on hand and are properly maintained.
- Keep the Director of Tennis informed on the status of the club’s equipment for the purpose of budgeting for replacement and repair items.
- TENNIS PRO SHOP OPERATIONS
- Ensure that all areas of the tennis club are neat, clean, and presentable at all times.
- Maintain a professional tennis pro shop, offering top line equipment, accessories, and the latest in tennis apparel. Be aware of both trends and fads as they pertain to tennis style and fashion.
- Help maintain tennis merchandise at a reasonable level commensurate with the member’s needs and desires.
- Help conduct monthly inventories for all merchandise.
- Provide necessary coordination with the club’s accounting department to assume a smooth billing operation.
This position is minimally supervised.
This position does have supervisory responsibility.
This position does have access to confidential information, including property owner files, email communications, annual budgets and reports.
Physical Demands
- Must be able to work outside and tolerate various weather conditions, including wet and/or humid conditions & extreme heat.
- Must be able to stand for a prolonged period of time.
- Must be able to lift and carry 25 pounds and push or pull weight in excess of 50 pounds.
- Must be able to play tennis at a high club-competitive level.
- Must be able to speak using fluent English.
- Must be able to see the computer screen, paperwork, etc.
