Job summary

The Y of Central Maryland is seeking a Youth Development Apprentice who will support classroom teachers, assist with curriculum implementation, and foster development in children through positive interactions. The role includes coaching from experienced educators in a welcoming environment that values every child.

You will participate in trainings such as CPR/First Aid and Child Abuse Prevention, while building relationships with families and team members to promote growth and well-being for all.

Qualifications

• High school senior, recent graduate, or adult learner with an interest in early childhood education or youth development.

Responsibilities

• Document children’s learning experiences and development through written observations and visual displays.
• Provide support in meeting the basic care needs of children, including meals, hygiene, and safety.
• Build positive relationships with children, parents, caregivers, and team members, modeling respectful and inclusive behavior.
• Complete required trainings including CPR/First Aid, Bloodborne Pathogens, Child Abuse Prevention, and Youth Development coursework.
• Ensure compliance with the Y’s Code of Conduct, state Office of Childcare regulations, and organizational policies.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Youth Development Apprentice is a hands‑on learning role designed for individuals passionate about early childhood education and youth development. Apprentices will be immersed in an engaging environment that respects young children as capable individuals, while also receiving coaching and feedback from experienced educators. This role supports classroom teachers, contributes to curriculum implementation, and fosters developmental growth in children through positive, developmentally appropriate interactions.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS, PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Ability to stand, walk, and move for extended periods.

• Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.

• Exposure to fitness equipment, cleaning products, and pool environments.

• Frequent interaction with members of all ages and fitness levels.

ACCOUNTABILITY

An offer of employment is contingent upon receipt of satisfactory results to meet minimum requirements for the position. They may include a background check, drug test, driver’s license record, CPS, and/or Criminal Background check.

Additional driver’s license check, CPS, Criminal Background check, alcohol and/or drug testing may be required to be processed in the future in order to meet and maintain the minimum requirements of this position.
