Overview

ACPS seeks a Head Start Teaching Assistant (Pre-K) to support classroom instruction and student learning under the supervision of the classroom teacher. The position involves administrative, clerical, and instructional support to help create an engaging and orderly learning environment.

General Definition Of Work

Provides responsible administrative, clerical, and human support in assisting the classroom teacher in the management and instruction of students; performs related tasks as required and directed; the aide may independently carry out aspects of the instructional program under the teacher’s supervision, including activities outside the normal school facility.

Essential Functions

  • Carries out instructional plans as designated by the classroom teacher and, if appropriate, the student’s Individual Educational Plan (IEP).
  • Carries out follow-up and review lessons.
  • Maintains a pleasant and orderly classroom environment and assists with materials, bulletin boards, and cleanup activities; supports the special education teacher and students as needed.
  • Assists teacher in maintaining appropriate classroom behavior and control; with teacher’s knowledge and approval, carries out appropriate discipline.
  • Procures, sets up, and operates audio-visual equipment.
  • Assists students in completion of learning tasks assigned by classroom teachers.
  • Assists teacher in related instructional activities (e.g., field trips, library, assemblies) as directed.
  • Assists in the movement of students between learning environments.
  • Performs attendance recording and collection of lunch monies as directed by the teacher; performs clerical duties as typed, filed, and duplicated at the teacher’s direction.
  • Supervises students during lunch, free time, and non-instructional periods as directed.
  • Assists with maintaining student records under supervision.
  • Assists with toileting, feeding, and positioning of students.
  • Participates in team meetings and may assist with related medical duties as required, such as basic medical-related tasks and assistive devices, in coordination with appropriate staff.
  • Assists with carrying over related services (e.g., Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech, Adapted Physical Education, and Vision) as applicable.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the classroom teacher or principal.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to develop and maintain an empathetic attitude toward disabled students; willingness to learn specialized instructional/management techniques; ability to communicate and develop effective working relationships with students, parents, and staff; high school graduate or equivalent and willingness to seek and maintain CPR certification.

Education and Experience

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school, including basic keyboard and filing training.

Physical Conditions and Nature of Work Contacts

Typically performed in school settings (classroom, gym, cafeteria, auditorium, recreational areas). Frequent walking and standing, light lifting up to 40 pounds, and other limited physical activities. Occasional travel with students on field trips; occasional movement of students by wheelchairs and other devices; occasional lifting of equipment up to 50 pounds. May require attendance at meetings beyond normal hours. Daily contact with children and collaboration with staff, parents, and medical professionals as needed.

Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities.
