Position Summary: The head coach is responsible for the overall development of athletes and assistant coaches in their sport or activity. This individual is often in charge of teaching athletes and coaches’ proper technique, organizing and conducting practice sessions, and providing feedback. The head coach also maintains disciplinary records, monitors grades for eligibility, and oversees team morale.

Responsibilities

• Communicate information regarding expectations, practices, competitions and other events with parents, players, and administration in a timely manner.
• Conduct orientation programs for parents, athletes, and assistant coaches.
• Work with the Athletic Director to develop non‑league schedule and confirm league schedule.
• Develop procedures and establish open communication with parents and athletes to address any issues or concerns related to the team.
• Prepare the program budget in conjunction with the Athletic Director.
• Manage ordering, inventory, repair, and cleaning of all sport‑specific equipment.
• Plan transportation to away games.
• Implement and follow NMAA, District, State, and School athletic codes, rules, and philosophies.
• Ensure completion of yearly physical exam and required courses for each athlete.
• Confirm residential and academic eligibility of each athlete in collaboration with the School Counselor and Office.
• Distribute team rosters, contest schedules and locations to all players, staff, and parents/guardians.
• Monitor athlete class attendance, behavior, and academic progress.
• Establish practice times and locations.
• Supervise and direct activities of assistant coaches.
• Ensure quality, effectiveness, and validity of all oral or written correspondence with media.
• Determine and procure any team awards.
• Hold fair and equitable tryouts.
• Teach sports techniques, rules, strategies, and tactics.
• Practice with clear objectives and goals.
• Condition athletes for endurance, strength, and agility.
• Supervise and conduct practices and contests safely; supervise locker rooms and transportation vehicles.
• Teach sportsmanship, cooperation, work ethic, and responsibility.
• Respond to player injuries with approved first aid techniques.
• Model appropriate behavior and sportsmanship in and out of the athletic arena.
• Discipline players as necessary in accordance with all applicable regulations.
• Provide positive motivation.
• Select, direct, and monitor activities of team managers.
• Consult with Athletic Trainer or medical professionals before allowing any injured player to return to activity.
• Abide by the Coaches’ Code of Conduct and uphold the highest moral character as a role model.
• Encourage team members to pursue academic potential and develop leadership, initiative, and good judgment.
• Communicate program goals and objectives to parents and the community.
• Provide a safe environment for practice and competition.
• Respect the integrity and judgment of the game officials.
• Exhibit modesty in victory and graciousness in defeat.

Minimum Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Valid coaching license from the New Mexico Public Education Department.
• Current certification in First Aid/CPR.
• Ability to maintain effective relationships with students, peers, and parents.
• Ability to read, interpret, and write reports and correspondence.
• Strong communication skills, including speaking effectively before groups.
• Basic algebra skills for calculation of figures.
• Common-sense understanding to carry out instructions in written, oral, or diagram form.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

• Employee must lift and/or move 25 to 50 pounds and may assist, move, or restrain heavier students.
• Frequent sitting, lifting, carrying, moving, hearing, and speaking required.
• Extensive use of computer display terminal.
• May need to break up fights.
• May work in outdoor weather and be exposed to wet, humid conditions, fumes, and chemicals.
• Possible exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials.
• Travel in school‑owned or leased vehicles while supervising students.
