Job summary

The New York Public Library seeks a visionary leader to oversee Preservation Services, including the Barbara Goldsmith Preservation Lab, Collection Management and Registrar services. The Director will unify staff around preservation policy, best practices, and strategic initiatives, partnering across centers and external institutions to safeguard our valuable research collections.

Hybrid work arrangement, with a focus on strategic planning, talent development, and cross-department collaboration

Qualifications

• ALA-accredited MLS and substantial research library experience or Master’s degree and relevant, substantial experience
• 10+ years of experience in an academic or research library setting, with increasingly responsible managerial responsibilities in preservation
• 7+ years of successful people management experience
• Experience managing multiple concurrent projects and setting clear performance goals

Responsibilities

• Shapes and effectively communicates preservation policies, standards and best practices for all collection formats
• Launches and leads preservation policy development as part of the Library’s 5-year Strategic Plan
• Develops a 10-year storage master plan identifying spaces for decommissioning and storage improvements
• Oversees collections emergency preparedness and disaster recovery planning
• Leads the development of budgeting, grants and partnerships within Preservation and related units
• Manages and develops staff, fosters inclusion and professional growth
• Represents NYPL at conferences and committees related to preservation
